Remember last playing file for audiobook, like sansa firmware does?
« on: July 17, 2010, 02:41:44 PM »
Hello, I am new Rockbox user and very excited about it. The features it offers are overwhelmingly awesome!

I bought clip+ 2GB primarily for listening audiobooks. Lets say I have an audiobook named foobar (Inside folder AUDIOBOOKS) which is divided into 4 CDs (mp3 files) having different folders for each CD. In the original firmware, when I choose Music -> Audiobooks -> foobar -> CD_X, it automatically highlights the audio file I was listening to last time and also asks whether I wish to resume from last position.

From what I have discovered so far, for Rockbox I need to press the power button to create a bookmark manually and when I browse to that folder again (main menu -> files -> AUDIOBOOKS -> foobar -> CD_X) and play any file, Rockbox prompts for resuming playback. Under bookmarking settings "Bookmarks on stop" and "Update on stop" are set to True.

For Rockbox can I have similar behavior to that of Sansa original firmware? So that when I select main menu -> files -> AUDIOBOOKS -> foobar -> CD_X, it would automatically highlight last playing file and continue from there.

Cheers for Rockbox team and great community!

Edit: I have been searching for an hour and couldn't find anything that makes sense.

Do you just want to resume from the last point if the last track you were playing before you turned off? Or do you want to retain the last played position for multiple audiobooks simultaneously?

I wish to have different playback position for separate audiobook folders. It is possible with Rockbox but user has to stop current playback in order to manually create a bookmark, which is little inconvenient.

Why would that be inconvenient? I mean, I would expect you stop the playback periodically one way or another (shutting down includes stopping the playback, which triggers a bookmark, if enabled)...

Anyway, Rockbox bookmarks works in a different way. It doesn't highlight the file(s), so you need to go via the "Resume bookmark" screen (or set "Load last bookmark" to yes). An easier way to resume a bookmark is if you enable the recent bookmarks list. Then you don't need to navigate to the audiobooks folder, just enter the first entry in the main menu and pick one of the bookmarks.

Yes, I understand that highlighting the file isn't a MUST have feature. It merely gives you an idea which file you were listening to last time. Instead, if we use the bookmarking feature (Rockbox) the user has to play a file from folder which has at least one bookmark and then the bookmarks choice is presented. I think I can live with repeating 2-3 additional steps for listening to audiobooks. I just thought this would be an improvement for user interface.

Thanks for all the help.

As a note, you don't have to stop playback to create a bookmark, you can do it from the context menu.

It isn't quite what you want, but if you turn recent bookmarks on, then you have access to the last ten bookmarks you have made from the main menu.  You might also want to use the unique only option.

Like the OP, i was missing the OF's automatic bookmarking feature of the Sansa ClipV2.

I have prototyped a Sansa-OF-style automatic bookmarking feature for Rockbox that works by storing resume positions for each track in the database.  You can check out the patch here:
