UI question: access all of the currently playing artist's songs/albums etc...
« on: July 15, 2010, 05:34:36 PM »
Hi everyone, new member here, loved Rockbox on my old Cown D2, loving it again on both my Clip +s (and I have a Clip V2 that's about to go through the same treatment too!)

My main MP3 player is a Sony A729. It's got a very handy UI feature, which basically lets you select the year/genre/artist/album and will then list all songs with the same tag for you. So if I want all the songs by the same artist, I select the artist, and it takes me to a list of all their albums, then songs. If I want all the tunes on the album, I just select the album. All this from the now playing screen.

This is very handy... I fill in my MP3 players and stick them on random and never use playlists. So if a particular artist comes on and I'm in the mood for some more, it's just a matter of a very quick manipulation.

Is there a way to quickly access such a menu with Rockbox? I've read the manual and tried to figure it out but no dice :/

Thanks!

If you weren't aware, a quick way to make a randomized playlist with all your music is to highlight the root folder (or Artist, Album, Track, etc. in the Database) and Long Select it, then choose Insert, then Insert Shuffled. Boom.

Anyway, your question relies on the Database and will not work unless it has been Initialized. While the song that has the artist/album/genre/etc. you want is playing, head into the Database, then to Same As Current... . You'll get a list of tag types that have matches in the Database (for example, if you have songs by the same Artist, Artist will be on the list). Simply pick one, and the list of matches you're after appears.

I hope this helps. :)
