Sansa Clip+ Suggestions
« on: July 15, 2010, 02:46:07 AM »
Loaded up Rockbox a few weeks ago on my Sansa Clip+, and I am loving it. However, there are a few suggestions I have.

1. The virtual keyboard has no delete function, rendering it useless for actually renaming files.

2. I can't seem to find a decent font that displays all my songs correctly. I have a large amount of Japanese music, and even Unifont can't display some of them. Another example that is borked is the Vertex series of mixes by Silvia (Vertex α, Vertex β, Vertex δ, and Vertex γ). Anything by Kyle Ward under his pseudonym Smiley (☺) is borked on artist listings. Is there a possibility of getting a really complete pack of a font? This is the main reason I have for going back to the Sansa firmware at times.

3. A play all function on the main menu would be nice, like the one the original Sansa firmware has.

4. Is there a midi plug-in? Not really needed, but would be neat.

1. Read the manual... Especially the part about the virtual keyboard. "Note: When the cursor is on the input line, Select deletes the preceding character"

2. Can't help you.

3. Use the context menu (long press SELECT) on the top of your music folder or in the database. From here you can add all your music to the dynamic playlist. For more details, the manual is your friend...

4. Yup, there is, and... You guessed it: The Manual!

Unifont is pretty complete:

If things like alphas and betas aren't showing up, theres a good chance the tags themselves aren't in unicode.  Have you checked the codepage for them?

Tried Unifont, worked for a lot, but the examples I gave are still borked, plus the size is too big for most of my themes.

I'll upload a few example of files later tomorrow.

Update:

Tested with  Sazanami-Mincho font, the only size 8 font supporting most of my files. GNU-Unifont breaks the titles even more, and most of my themes.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3800167/kaisouroku.mp3 - Title is totally broken.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3800167/vertex_beta.mp3 - Beta symbol is broken.

Those tags are gibberish in foobar as well, so its probably the files and not the font.

I'm running XP Service pack 3 with Japanese Unicode support, Foobar2000 displays the tags properly.

Ditto saratoga, I just see gibberish, and it looks like you're using ID3v1 only (old, old, incredibly old school tags) which don't even support unicode-formatted text.

Yes, but your tags aren't unicode, which is why they don't work on anything but your PC.  Since your foobar can read the tags, have it rewrite them.  Test it first to make sure the tags get converted to unicode correctly though.

Is there a tool to convert Japanese (and other symbols if possible) into Unicode?

The tags can be displayed completely correct (as far as I can tell, I don't read Japanese but it looks correctly) in Rockbox by adjusting the "Default Codepage" settings under "General Settings > Display".

This setting was especially created for this use case. If I understand correctly, ID3v1 tag are written in the local codepage of the system you create them - with with no way for the system that reads them to tell what codepage this is. By setting the above mentioned option to "Japanese", Rockbox can interpret them correctly (which on the other hand could mean that some of your other tracks are displayed wrong if the tags were created differently).

All in all you are better off tagging the files again as mentioned in a more appropriate tag format. As far as I understood ID3v2.3 can be unicode or any other codepage, ID3v2.4 is always unicode. Any decent tag editor should be able to write these tags for you and let you chose which ID3 format you want to tag. Many of them can also batch convert files - have a look at our UsefulTools wiki page for some suggestions.

P.S. Usually I would link to the specific part in one of our online manuals for the description of an option but they are broken today, the PDF versions are still up though and you can read about the "Default Codepage" setting in the Clip+ manual available here: Daily Manuals. It's a helpful read anyway. ;)

Which ones use ID3v2.4? I have a few of the programs on the link, but all of them just say 3v2.

Thanks much. I've used Foobar2000 for years and never noticed some of my tags were outdated, or that it would convert to unicode so smoothly. Sorry to be such a bother.
