Ipod 5.5 video boot/screen issue
« on: July 10, 2010, 10:44:04 AM »
Here is the issue with my ipod..

when I boot up my ipod:
1) the screen goes white with lines going through it in seemingly random locations. straight lines though.

Then:
A)If I continue to play with the scroll wheel, or anything that will keep the screen lit up... The screen will stay white with lines through it for as long as I continuously toy with it.

B) But if I don't touch the ipod for 10 seconds the backlight will drop and then if I wait another 10 seconds the ipod will work normally

I uploaded a video to demonstrate what is happening.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7oX_N8qTA7k

Some more random info:
- The screen does have some appearance issues even when normally working, it acts strange to whitish colors....
This isn't my main concern as I just use black backgrounds to compensate for this, the weird booting is my main issue.
- It does the same exact thing in ipod firmware (yes I can boot ipod firmware as it is a double boot)
- Ipod firmware is almost unbearable for me to use because of my screen's sensitivity to white colors (ipod's whole theme lol)

Looks like you need a new LCD screen. Don't worry, these are fairly cheap. You can find them on ebay for about $10 on average.

I know I most likely need a new lcd screen, but it still doesn't make sense to me that it will work after 20 seconds of waiting...

It makes me believe its a software, or other hardware issue not pertaining to the screen itself.

*Regardless, I have just purchased a new screen which will be shipped to me within the next week... Still looking for possible causes for this, or a semi-indepth reason why the screen would act abnormal, but then normally.

The fact that you see the same problem in Apple's firmware makes it not likely to be related to software.  Flaky hardware can act in many strange and unpredictable ways.

I replaced the screen and the ipod looks great now...  ;D

This is hands down one the weirdest hardware issues I have ever encountered.... And I work around alot of technology.
I can't think of any reason for my ipod to work correctly after waiting 30 seconds..... Anyway, my ipod is fixed now... And that is all that matters.

Thanks for pushing at me to buy a new screen, I should listen more often to the experts,
Thanks again, Warfront1

I've found that LCD screens screw up in the strangest ways. An iPod I was working on had a screen turn into a colorful grid pattern when the iPod was on for a few minutes. But a new screen fixed that right up.

I also have a 5.5g video, and have also had issues with  the screen, in my case it would boot just fine until I touched the click wheel. Then the screen would fill with colourful artifacts/pixels that would gradually disappear as I scroll further down! 2 hours on google 1 LCD unit and $25 later, well sorted  :)

You're assuming a global currency....

$25 (NZD) seems perfectly reasonable to me.
