features/improvements of current build vs my old installed version?
« on: July 08, 2010, 01:10:49 PM »
I currently have Rockbox installed on my Sansa e250 2GB mp3 player. Has been on there for over a year and been working great. Fantastic piece of software, but I now see that there appears to be a new version available. My current build has been so outstanding that I have had no need to check to see if there was an updated one. I currently have version r18265-080813 installed, but it looks like from the download page that the current version for my equipment is r27350.

Is there somewhere I can go to see what the improvements or fixes are over my existing installation? Also, do I simply overwrite my existing .ROCKBOX folder in the root directory? Or is there another method recommended for upgrading the firmware?

You could check the changelog for each release between then and now (Rockbox 3.1 -- Rockbox 3.6).

The recommended method of upgrading is to use Rockbox Utility to install a new version.  If you wish to upgrade manually you can just extract the rockbox.zip for the new version into the root of your player, overwriting the contents of the existing .rockbox folder.

The changelog and manual links on the front page are probably going to be of interest to you.

Your version is from 2008, so all changes since 3.0 are interesting for you.

OK, sounds good. I'm currently sifting through ALL those changes to try and find stuff that pertains to my hardware & would benefit me, but does the latest firmware possibly support FULL USB connecting.

I have a 16GB SDHC card installed and right now if I want to put something on it, I have two options:

- Connect the Sansa player to my PC, but it will only recognize the 2GB of internal memory. Therefore, I transfer stuff to the 2GB section. Disconnect the unit and then manually copy or move it from the internal memory to the 16GB from within Rockbox.

- Or remove the 16GB SDHC card. Put it into a USB adapter I have & insert it all into the PC for transferring files to that way.

I was hoping maybe this newer firmware will allow a PC to recognize BOTH memory sections/areas with Rockbox running. Like it can with the original Sansa firmware (2GB limit).

If you upgrade then Rockbox will present both the internal memory and the SD(HC) card as separate drives, exactly like the Sansa OF does, but Rockbox supports SDHC (so your 16GB card will be recognized)

Excellent. I just got finished installing/flashing my player and all went well. I knew there was a reason I loved ROCKBOX   ;D   My PC is now detecting my 16GB internal SDHC card too. That feature alone is worth the upgrade. I'm sure there are a lot of other great upgrades & I will look at the list to try & figure which ones I will want and like, but this one definitely helps make things easier for transferring files. Thanks for all the help.
