So basically anyone that's new to Rockbox should find the instructions to change the database.ignore file so that the database will work correctly.

If they want to put their music collection inside their OS folder, then yes they'll have to do that.  Probably not a good idea though if you ever plan on uninstalling (or just deleting and clean reinstalling rockbox).

IMO giving people advice in the manual that could lead them to lose all their music if they follow the uninstall directions is probably not a good idea.

Hmmm...tis a good point. Then why isn't there a "suggested" directory to place the files in. I make backups so I'm not worried about losing anything if I decide to uninstall Rockbox or decide to start over, but, there should be a "safe" place set by default and therefore mentioned in the "Putting music on your player" section. That's all I'm asking. Didn't mean to start a flame war. If I offended anyone I do apologize :). Thanks for all the developers fine work and those that have genuinely helped me with my issues.

So basically anyone that's new to Rockbox should find the instructions to change the database.ignore file so that the database will work correctly. That seems counterproductive.
The vast majority of users do not try to put their media inside of the firmware folder.  If you can point out what part of the manual gave you the impression that you should do that then we can improve things.  A more explicit note about the existence of a database.ignore inside of the .rockbox directory has been suggested already.  Would this have been sufficient?

Just stating a suggested location would be infinitely more helpful.
People are resistant to this idea because, strictly speaking, it isn't accurate.  Rockbox doesn't really suggest or demand any specific location for your files.  People who continue to use iTunes to sync media to their iPods could get the wrong idea if you tell them that media "should" be put in some default location.  Similar issues exist for people who dual-boot Rockbox and the MR-100's original firmware.

I wouldn't be adverse to putting a note in saying something like "You can put your music wherever you like, but putting it in the /.rockbox directory is not recommended."

Sadly people are so used to being forced to do things in a specific way by rubbish like itunes that it doesn't occur that they are free to put it where they want.

Every program/Operating system I have ever used (going way back to IBM PC-XT...yes I've been around a long time) has a "suggested" install location for files. Having been using PC's for over 26 years has just locked me into that mindset. The Rockbox directory was the only new directory I noticed on the Ipod thus I figured that was where the database wanted the music files to be (since nowhere in the manual is one "suggested"). I don't know why having a "suggested" location is such a bad thing, especially for newbies. If anyone had read thru the entire thread they would have noticed that I had (a) added the ID3 tags as suggested then (b) moved the files OUT of the Rockbox directory (as suggested) and into the ROOT Ipod directory thus allowing the database to build properly. If this is still a bad location then why is everyone that has posted so resistant to tell myself as well as any newbie reading the thread a "safe", "proper" location? (no offense is meant by this or any further posts :) ).

Thank You :) This is exactly what I was TRYING to say ^^

Most media players I have used give the option to set the base directory of the media library (or even to scan the entire hard drive).  Default location for media and default installation directory are two different things.  Rockbox does have a default installation directory -- /.rockbox.

I think a note that points out advantages of keeping media separated from firmware resources would be much preferable to suggesting a default location to people.  On my M:Robe 100 the files synced by the M:trip application are located in directories like /User/Music/M0000003/.  It would be misleading to suggest that this location is less suitable than the root of the player from Rockbox's standpoint.

The root is fine.  If you are happy with your files in this location then that's great.  I don't think we should coerce other people into sorting their files in a particular way.  (I like my media stored in a deeper file tree, for instance).

I would think that the fact that Rockbox claims to work with the music already on the player would suggest pretty clearly that it's not necessary to put the music in some suggested folder.

If anything should be mentioned it should be a note for folders it's suggested *not* to put music in.

This is already mentioned sort of "While files may be organized however you like" - I'll make it more explicit.

Apparently no one understands the meaning of the word "suggested".

1.Main Entry: sug·gest
Pronunciation: \səg-ˈjest, sə-ˈjest\
Function: transitive verb
Etymology: Latin suggestus, past participle of suggerere to pile up, furnish, suggest, from sub- + gerere to carry
Date: 1526

1 a obsolete : to seek to influence : seduce b : to call forth : evoke c : to mention or imply as a possibility <suggested that he might bring his family> d : to propose as desirable or fitting <suggest a stroll> e : to offer for consideration or as a hypothesis <suggest a solution to a problem>
2 a : to call to mind by thought or association <the explosion…suggested sabotage — F. L. Paxson> b : to serve as a motive or inspiration for <a play suggested by a historic incident>

— sug·gest·er noun

copied from this source: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/suggested

Does this mean it HAS to be there....no. I am TRYING to help new people to NOT have the issues I had. You can organize it however you want but the manual does NOT say where the folder you made could be placed...FFS why is this such a hard concept to grasp.

There is no need to get upset - I said I'd change it, and I have.  It now reads "Files may be placed wherever you like on the \dap{}, but it is strongly suggested not to place them in the /.rockbox folder."

Contrary to what you seem to believe, I do know what suggested means.  I suggest everyone calms down :)

MokeyDwarf, posting dictionary definitions makes it seem like you are trolling.  Is the change AlexP made acceptable to you or do you still have a problem?

Alex has definitely cured the problem, in fact I wasn't pointing the previous post towards him since he seems to be one of maybe 2 that does understand what I was trying to say. And no I'm not trolling, I had this thread being watched thru my email. I do get some entertainment out of seeing how hard headed some people can be. Thanks Alex :)
