If they want to put their music collection inside their OS folder, then yes they'll have to do that.  Probably not a good idea though if you ever plan on uninstalling (or just deleting and clean reinstalling rockbox).

IMO giving people advice in the manual that could lead them to lose all their music if they follow the uninstall directions is probably not a good idea.

MokeyDwarf:
Hmmm...tis a good point. Then why isn't there a "suggested" directory to place the files in. I make backups so I'm not worried about losing anything if I decide to uninstall Rockbox or decide to start over, but, there should be a "safe" place set by default and therefore mentioned in the "Putting music on your player" section. That's all I'm asking. Didn't mean to start a flame war. If I offended anyone I do apologize :). Thanks for all the developers fine work and those that have genuinely helped me with my issues.

The vast majority of users do not try to put their media inside of the firmware folder.  If you can point out what part of the manual gave you the impression that you should do that then we can improve things.  A more explicit note about the existence of a database.ignore inside of the .rockbox directory has been suggested already.  Would this have been sufficient?

People are resistant to this idea because, strictly speaking, it isn't accurate.  Rockbox doesn't really suggest or demand any specific location for your files.  People who continue to use iTunes to sync media to their iPods could get the wrong idea if you tell them that media "should" be put in some default location.  Similar issues exist for people who dual-boot Rockbox and the MR-100's original firmware.

I wouldn't be adverse to putting a note in saying something like "You can put your music wherever you like, but putting it in the /.rockbox directory is not recommended."

Sadly people are so used to being forced to do things in a specific way by rubbish like itunes that it doesn't occur that they are free to put it where they want.

MokeyDwarf:
Every program/Operating system I have ever used (going way back to IBM PC-XT...yes I've been around a long time) has a "suggested" install location for files. Having been using PC's for over 26 years has just locked me into that mindset. The Rockbox directory was the only new directory I noticed on the Ipod thus I figured that was where the database wanted the music files to be (since nowhere in the manual is one "suggested"). I don't know why having a "suggested" location is such a bad thing, especially for newbies. If anyone had read thru the entire thread they would have noticed that I had (a) added the ID3 tags as suggested then (b) moved the files OUT of the Rockbox directory (as suggested) and into the ROOT Ipod directory thus allowing the database to build properly. If this is still a bad location then why is everyone that has posted so resistant to tell myself as well as any newbie reading the thread a "safe", "proper" location? (no offense is meant by this or any further posts :) ).
