Have to have apple firmware installed to install rockbox?

I have an apple mini 2g (silver case with 4G on back) and formatted, installed apple firmware then try to install rockbox and it thinks I have a first gen and won't install. Got apple firmware from

I don't have a backup of original firmware and Itunes won't recognize and repair. Is there a way to install just the rockbox firmware w/o having the apple on the ipod? Using ipodpatcher seems to want to have an existing firmware to patch.  Or does anyone know what is causing the 1st/2nd gen confusion in the upgrade process?

Once you get the partitions vaguely approaching an ipod I think itunes should recognize it.
