According to the manual you should also be able to do this with the Record button once in the While Recording Screen. It does work on my first generation e280 and it should have the same keymap as your player. 

I did notice that the action of the button isn't very reliable.  I seem to have trouble getting it to recognize the button press sometimes.  For some reason, it appears that I have an easier time starting recording by doing a "double-click" on the button.  I don't know whether this is some peculiarity of my hardware or not.

From the main menu, a long press of the record  button will get you to the While Recording Screen.  As Chronon said, pressing the record button in the While Recording Screen will start recording. Pressing the play button in the While Recording Screen will also start recording.
