IPOD 5: Player won't boot into USB mode
« on: June 24, 2010, 05:39:23 AM »
Hello all,

When I plug in the USB cable while a track is playing, this is the sequence of events:

1. Switches to Rockbox's screen with USB image for 3 seconds
2. Reboots to "Do not disconnect" screen for 2 seconds
3. Switches to "OK to disconnect"

If I plug in the USB cale when the iPod is off, it goes to Rockbox's USB screen and just stays there.

In both cases, the iPod doesn't show up in My Computer at all..

Does anybody know how I can get around this? I've tried booting with Menu pressed, booting into the original firmware, and then back again.. Can't get around it!

I am running ver. 3.5.1 (and will upgrade to 3.6 once connected)

Thank you!

Enter dmesg into the command shell just after plugging it in to check if it is being detected.

Try to eliminate factors that could cause USB to fail (such as a bad cable, bad USB port, etc.).  Does booting into Apple's firmware before inserting the USB cable make any difference?

It works on my laptop fine, but not on my work PC.. I need to listen to music at work, its what keeps me sane :-)

I tried a different cable, and tried the USB ports in the back of the PC.. to get the same result..

Why does it immediately go from "Do not disconnect" to "OK to disconnect", without showing up on the PC? Can't figure that out

The point of failure does not seem to be your player.  I'm not sure why your work PC doesn't want to accept a MSC connection.

I plugged in a USB stick and it didn't work either.. Spoke to IT and turns out they've disabled USB connections to try and avoid theft of important docs (ever heard of webmail?), and of course entry of viruses..

Getting an exception from my boss as we speak..

Thanks though!
