Possibly a very dumb question regarding players
« on: June 23, 2010, 05:01:36 PM »
Hello all!

I was wondering (and I've searched here) if Rockbox would work on those cheap little MP3 players ($5). I have a project where I need a player to send a 60 second sound clip to a pair of NXT speakers. Would it be possible to strip the OS out of the player and install something more customized to what I need?

Thanks for any and all help. Sorry if it's a lame question!

I did see those but was wondering if it could be applied to something else.

If you are willing to put in the work you can go through the same process that everyone else does to get a new player supported by Rockbox.

If there were other players, we would mention it.  The list of devices rockbox runs on is not a secret kept to a select few.  You have access to the complete list on the front page, and a more detailed list if you click the status link at the bottom of that list.

Got it. I guess I was kind of hoping that Rockbox could be installed along the lines of like switching from Windows to Linux but it's obviously way more complicated than that. My hat off to the people that program and make it work!

Parts of Rockbox must be specifically coded for every different piece of hardware. There are far more hardware differences between different MP3 players than between PCs.

Maybe something like this http://www.adafruit.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=17_21&products_id=94 would be better for you, there are plenty of other similar and more capable devices out there. It's a very long time since I did any serious looking but some can be triggered of external inputs to synch them with automated figures for example.
