Should a 60GB X5 disk operate in a 30GB X5L?

I broke my 60GB X5 display and suspected I had also broken the disk. But I couldn't be sure because I couldn't read the broken display. So I bought a 30GB X5L, disconnected the disk and connected the one from the X5. The display says 'HDD error.' Does that confirm that the disk is definitely dead?

If it was formatted, yes. Otherwise, it may need to be formatted. Try plugging it in.
