Problem with iriver h120

(1/1)

jamesd256:
Hi,

I used the Rockbox utility to install on to an iRiver ihp-120 I just got from ebay.  First I tried the EU 1.66 firmware, but it didn't work.  I finally got it to boot Rockbox by using the US 1.66 firmware.  I noticed that it had 1.63 U as the version when I got it.

So it boots in to Rockbox, and while I am doing some recordings, it shows some display corruption (like snow) on one line of the screen, then says disk full, and starts making a loud buzzing noise through the headphones.

At this point, I am unable to turn it off with the stop button, so I press reset a few times, and it comes back to the iRiver firmware.

But now, I can turn it off using the stop button, but it won't turn on via the play button.  It only comes on when I reset it a few times.

I tried to remedy this by reverting to the original un-patched firmware update v1.66 US.  During the upgrade, the screen got stuck in 'upgrading firmware' for over 10 minutes.  Fearing the worst, I reset it, and it came back to the state before I tried the last flash.

I guess the HD could be corrupt?  I think I'll wipe it, check it and start again, but I've run out of time for now.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Edit:

I did format and check the drive.  An error was found, but now the drive reports OK.

I have tried to flash it a few times, but it always remains on the 'upgrading' page forever, and never turns off.  However, it does show the new rom version when I reset it following that, so it does flash.

Having tried the old original flash image, I went back to a rockbox patched flash, but it still doesn't turn on the normal way.

I know it is not a HW problem with the play button, as it functions once the unit boots.  To turn it on, I have to press a pin in the reset hole.  If I just do this, it boots to original firmware, if I press reset while holding play, it boots to rockbox.

Edit:

My new(old) iRiver is now officially bricked.  After the device drained it's battery by not switching off,  I attached the charger and tried another boot.  Result: brick.

It now just sits on the initial iRiver splash and doesn't go any further.  If I try booting with hold engaged, it tells me hold is on, then turns off.

Is there any way to recover such a bricked player?
