IpodDisk-like USB mode
« on: June 10, 2010, 02:41:54 PM »
Would be nice if rockbox have a feature like IpodDisk. For those who doesn't know, IpodDisk is a way to navigate trough iPod songs using the Finder interface.
Rockbox could use database information to build the folder structure.

Is it even possible?

Rockbox has a file browser. Finder is a file browser.

Sorry, I think I was not clear...
What I want is that rockbox show an alternate file structure on my PC when i connect it on my PC, just like iPodDisk does.
Like that: instead of navigating real files, I would see the database structure like folders in my file browser.
Was I clear?  ???

I don't get how this is different to either looking at the real file structure, or looking at the database.

Well, iPod has the file organization problem when you upload music trough iTunes. Since rockbox can understand that structure, would be nice (at least I think) to navigate trough database in my PC with iPod connected, so that I can backup my songs back to PC.

You can use that. Use Itunes. That's exactly how the Ipods work. (And the Apple firmware doesn't do anything there either. It's simply the database, it's maintained by Itunes, and the only thing the Ipod does is reading it.)

The problem is that i can't copy songs from iPod to PC using iTunes. What iPodDisk does is mount iPod as if the file structure was the database itself.
See this picture:
http://sourceforge.net/dbimage.php?id=47937

The folders that appear are not real folders. Instead, they are, from left to right, the artist and album list, respectively.

It sounds like MTP might possibly do what you want

While this is basically what our upcoming MTP mode will do, you can already simply browse your ipod and copy the music off.  Rockbox does not use a special folder structure like the Apple firmware, so tools like iPodDisk are unnecessary unless you're using the Apple firmware.

If you're talking about media that's stored in the iTunes_Control/Music/ directories, then you can easily just boot Apple's firmware and use the product that you're describing for now.

Actually, I'm not certain that it's necessary to reboot.  I think many programs of this sort just search for an itunesdb in the standard place and parse it to find the names and locations of various songs.  The itunesdb will still be present unless you deleted it since you added the media with iTunes.

I believe that the free Sharepod <http://www.getsharepod.com/> will do what you want. It runs on the PC and can extract tracks from the iPod Apple database, naming the files according to the track tag information.

Of course it's an option... I was just suggesting this feature in rockbox, so any player can use such thing in any PC(despite I think just Apple mess things like that).

You can already just store a program like this on your player and run it when you mount the iPod as a UMS device.  I don't really see the value in increasing the binary size for this functionality (which would only be useful for iPods).

Well, I will use Sharepod for my issue, that helped a lot.
Beyond this, I will wait the MTP feature to see if it helps too.

Thanks for the help  ;D
