ipod 5th generation; crash/reboot - crash/hung during audio playback

(1/1)

z0rk:
I am running Rockbox v3.6 on a CF card modded 5th generation iPod. During playback of audio files Rockbox either crashes and reboots or crashes and hangs, i.e. I have to menu/select to reboot.
This behavior is consistent. Sometimes I can play a whole album without any problems. Sometimes a reboot happens/needs to be forced more than once during playback of one album. I primarily use FLAC, but I've also tested this against MP3 and OGG. Although it appears that the crash/reboot or crash/hung cycle is less frequent with MP3 and OGG.
I've tried different CF cards, but I am still getting the same behavior.
I've switched out the CF for the stock hard drive: NO problems - playback always works!

When I tested the CF cards in a 1st generation iPod Mini with v3.6 it works fine. I experience no problems during playback.

Several years ago (?) I ran a custom version of Rockbox (3.1) compiled for the Mini (http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/MiniCF) on my modded 5th generation iPod and I didn't have any playback issues (same CF cards!!!). I am not sure if this is relevant, but I thought I mention it.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Hm, possibly DMA is going wrong in some cases? You might want to try a build without HAVE_ATA_DMA defined. That would explain why it goes wrong more often when playing FLAC, since disk reads are more frequent.

z0rk:
I haven't build from source in quite some time, but I will look it up in the docs. I assume HAVE_ATA_DMA should be just commented out?

Thanks torne

torne:
Yup, comment it out in firmware/export/config/ipodvideo.h and see if that makes any difference. Before you do that, though, it'd be good if you could post the information from the debug menu under view disk info.

z0rk:
In preparation of some extended testing this week, I've re-installed 3.6 and haven't had any issues since. I did confirm though that the issue existed under 3.5.1. Should I run into it again, I'll post an update with the debug dump.

Thanks again torne!
