Sansa e200 series and expandability with Rockbox
« on: June 02, 2010, 01:24:57 PM »
I have a Sansa e250 that normally has 2GB of internal memory and 2GB of expansion memory via its SDHC slot. I have had Rockbox loaded on it for several years now and it has been working great. One advantage of it is that it allows an additional 8GB of SDHC memory (instead of the normal 2GB) in the expansion slot to give it a total of 10GB.

I am looking to get another e200 series (from ebay) for a family member and would like to put Rockbox on it as well. At the time I put my e250 Rockbox firmware on, only certain e series models could take the Rockbox & I was lucky enough to have one that was able to have it installed.  I am interested in either a e260 or e280 series and I initially thought I might have to find out the version number in order to install Rockbox, but I now see from the homepage that ALL e200 series models can accept Rockbox. Therefore, I don't need to be careful in what version I get.

With that being said, I was just wondering about the expandability option. Rockbox on my e250 allows an additional 8GB. How much additional SDHC memory can be added on to the e260 & e280 with Rockbox firmware installed? 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, etc.?

Also, on any of the e200 series players with Rockbox,  can random/shuffle play be done for ALL tracks between either the internal memory or the SDHC memory?  Or is it limited to just one of them (internal or memory slot)?

All capacities, and yes it doesn't matter where files are.

All capacities? Cool. So, what is the largest SDHC available these days & can be used by a Rockbox loaded Sansa e player?  I wish my e250 could go beyond 8GB of extra memory.  Or can it & I just somehow thought 8GB was the limit?

A somewhat related question. Will rockbox ever support SDXC cards? They are not that common now, but it would be nice if eventually rockbox did.

Some types of SDXC will likely be supported, others won't. If I understand correctly there's two different versions of the SDXC hardware, and one is backward compatible (and so may be able to be supported in players Rockbox runs on) while the other isn't (sacrificing compatibility for speed, if I recall). These, obviously, will not work in players without the different hardware.

I personally have an e270 (6GB internal), and a 8GB SDHC in the microSD slot.

So yeah... it should work.

Yes, for the Nth time: *any* SDHC card will work. There is no limit imposed by Rockbox.

It only accepts microSDHC cards, although there is a $5 adapter available* that lets you use the larger SDHC cards.

The largest microSDHC card on the mkt is 32GB and is only available directly from Sandisk for $200. There is a 16GB card of theirs that is more affordable.

*The first time I tried the adapter it bricked my Fuze. There's possibly more info about others experience with the adapter at anythingbutipod.com.
