how stable is fuze v2
« on: May 28, 2010, 11:53:14 AM »
I have been using rockbox since it first came to the sansa fuze v1 (UNStable port) and it has always worked great!!!

but my sister has a fuze v2; and she is afraid it will "brick" if she puts the bootloader on it;
(Red, 4gb sansa fuze v2, latest FW)

I am debating on offering her my mp3 player if her's bricks, but first I would like to know how "Stable"  the bootloader is...

"Rockbox runs on these players, but is incomplete, less usable or has problems that limit it to advanced users"

@yapper I haven't run into any problems at all in the past few days using it. What problems are you talking about (so i can be aware)?

See my thread here.

The bootloader is perfectly fine - once you get it installed, there should be no issues that could brick your player. However, the software will occasionally crash or hang, and in some cases, it can lock up in such a way that it is impossible to reset (as far as I know) - the only solution being to let the battery drain until the player shuts off, then recharge and restart the player.

This has only happened to me once in over a week of use, and I have bought three Fuzes (all v2), two of which have been running Rockbox, so I don't know that it would necessarily be too much of a problem, but I still think there should be some warning somewhere.

Such as, perhaps, the description that says it "has problems that limit it to advanced users"?

:D
Yes, I thought someone would mention that. I was thinking of a more specific warning somewhere, to keep people from assuming the player had somehow bricked itself when this happened.

And it would be even better if someone could come up with a way of resetting the player in this situation, where the method described in the FAQ fails to work.

If we listed all the ways an incomplete port could go wrong, we'd be updating that list hourly, forever. That's just daft. If the generic warning we give doesn't scare you away, then you only have yourself to blame!

However, if you feel you want to keep such a list updated for the FuzeV2 - this *is* a community project. Dive into the wiki and do it yourself.

Would what be even nicer is if the port were finished, and this didn't happen.

I regularly use a V1 Fuze for a couple of hours per day, but the past few days I've switched over to using the latest build on one of my V2 Fuzes, and it hasn't crashed on me yet.  Mainly listening to MP3 podcasts, but I also watched a couple of 30-minute video files, and spent a few minutes messing around with the FM radio.  I'm sure there are things behind the scenes that still need to be done, but for me so far, from a user's perspective, it has worked as well as my Fuze V1.  Identical, in fact (knock on wood).

Still no problems with Rockbox on my V2 Fuze.  No crashes with daily use.  I'm now convinced that Rockbox on my V2 Fuze is just as good as it is on my V1 Fuze.  The people who have been working on the V2 Fuze have done an absolutely wonderful job.  In just a couple of months it's gone from useless to seemingly perfect from a casual user's perspective (even though there's probably still work to be done).  Thanks!
