Trouble building database (release 3.5.1 on iPod 5G 30GB)

(1/1)

joshi:
Hello all,

I haven't been able to build the database for my 30GB iPod... help please? Here's my experience:

* Installed Rockbox (via the utility), attempted to build database 5-6 times
* iPod crashes each time; "files found" count only reaches 800 to 2100 (actual song count is ~4000) before failing
* Uninstalled Rockbox in annoyance  :P :P
Second try:

* Reinstalled via the utility, attempted to build database
* The file count increases much too rapidly this time (0 to 3000 on first tick, increasing by 50-100 each tick afterward)
* Experienced multiple outcomes, none successful:

* Undefined instruction at 935E3554 (0)
* Data abort at 904AFABC (0)
* Most commonly, the file count gets stuck on an anomalous value (12813 files found, no further progress) but playback still works fine

Some things I can think of that might be related:

* I've used several different programs to organize my iPod database (Winamp 5, Anapod Explorer, one other I can't remember), as iTunes is an utter ball of slime
* Many of my MP3s contain Japanese text in the ID3 tags, some of which are incorrectly encoded (song/artist names display as ASCII garbage)
Is there any other information I can provide that would be helpful?

Llorean:
Since the database depends on the tags, maybe start by fixing the tags and seeing if it has problems once they're no longer bad?

Lear:
On the other hand, crashes aren't nice. If you can figure out a couple of tracks that causes crashes, I and a few others would be interested in looking at them.

One way to do so is to try halving the number of files on the iPod and see if it crashes (if not, the bad files are in the other half).

joshi:
Hmm, forgot to mention that for the second try, I decided to have only the files in the iPod_control directory scanned. But it seems that I placed database.ignore in the root directory without any corresponding unignore files elsewhere...

After putting database.unignore in /iPod_control as I intended, everything works just fine :) It's blazing fast too-- very satisfied user here!

I'll check my other files too and see if I can find any specific ones that cause crashes.

BTW, shouldn't "build database" do nothing in the case I described (ignore file in root directory)?

mc2739:
The build database process still needs to scan the entire directory structure.  How else would it find an existing database.unignore file?
