Fuze (v2) cannot browse while playing?
« on: May 18, 2010, 09:10:49 PM »
After purchasing a Fuze on Thursday, I really did like it and the simplicity of the firmware was a big plus, but I have already encountered bugs when playing music and it simply does not have some of the most basic settings found in other mp3 players on the market (ie. no pause on headphone unplug, playlists are shuffled on-the-go so songs are repeated or skipped and you can't go back, default album art displayed when none available--crowding the screen and distracting the user, etc.). So I was happy to hear that rockbox was finally ported to the Sansa Fuze v2 (I used rockbox on my old mp3 and loved it). I like it on the Fuze very much already, but there's one big thing:

You cannot do anything while a song is playing: In order to change settings, browse files, play games, etc. the current song must be paused before being allowed to return to the menu. Given that there is some sort of recording icon on the now playing screen, I assume this is to do with the option to record from the microphone or perhaps listen to the radio. I don't see myself using these features, so would it be possible to disable them? I don't mind building the code on my own. This is really a big downside to rockbox.
Also, I find the navigation a bit odd, would I be able to change this without too much trouble?

I am pretty computer-savvy, how long would it take to setup and build the code on my own, then make these changes?

Thanks in advance for any help guys, I love rockbox keep up the good work! :)

The Fuze v2 is a very new port so that may explain some of the inconsistencies.

For advice on how to setup the dev environment, take a look here: http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/DocsIndex#For_Developers particularly at http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/DevelopmentGuide and (if you're on Windows) I recommend http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/VMwareDevelopmentPlatform too.

As for the myriad of questions that you will no doubt have, please refer to the IRC channel, or http://www.rockbox.org/irc/

And have fun!

What happens when you try to go to a different screen without pausing?

There is a bug which causes the scroll-wheel to stop working after about 20min. There is a patch in flyspray for it. http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/11288 should fix it.

I can view the current playlist (Forget which button), however any navigation I attempt from the playlist sends me back to the now playing screen. Pressing the long home button (to go back to the menu) pauses the song first, then returns to the menu. If I press play at any time when the song is paused and I am not at the wps, it immediately switches back to the wps before playing. Very upsetting :(

You have to use the scroll-wheel to navigate the menus. Clockwise goes down the list, counter clockwise goes up. Left goes back and Right goes forward in the menus.

If any of that disagrees with what the manual says the buttons should do, file a bug report.
