Problems with flac?

I just downloaded and installed roxbox on a ipod video 30gb ,i am able to play flac but i get the glitches/bugs when ever changing songs or sometimes one song merges with another?

When i put music file on it i just drag and drop to playlist in ipod drive ,i don't know if this is correct but it works for the most part.

I don't know to much about flac files ,i just started using them and i have a feeling this problem started when i fist started deleting tracks i didn't need and re uploading them as i see fit.

My ipod i old and very used ,iv noticed that rockbox uses the disk more than the regular ipod firmware ,i can feel it.

Any suggestions please?

Rockbox is definitely okay with dragging and dropping music onto all supported devices (it's certainly easier than syncing via iTunes or another media player).

I have a fair number of FLAC encoded files on my iriver H10 20GB and I've never once run into any issues with them such as what you're describing. Disk usage does get increased somewhat when playing back FLAC files and other high bitrate/lossless files, simply because the buffer needs to be refilled a little more often.

The only way to "merge" one file to another during playback that I know of is the crossfade setting, which can be configured various different ways or disabled completely if you don't want it, assuming the "merging" is happening during track skips or such you might want to check the crossfade setting (under Playback Settings in the WPS context menu or from Settings -> Playback Settings starting from the Main Menu).

This might be causing the drive in your ipod to become quite fragmented, and therefore a lot more seeks around it are needed to find the bits of each flac file (which by their nature are very large, so will suffer from fragmentation more than smaller MP3 or Vorbis files would do.

The best way to fix fragmentation for an ipod is to copy ALL your music off it, delete it from the ipod, and then copy it back on again. This will result in nice contiguous files, which means the disk heads don't need to wander all over the place to read their content, and therefore hopefully a lot faster reading whilst Rockbox is buffering them.

You should also check if you have the directory cache enabled - it's off by default but almost all users of hard-disk based players will find performance is improved if it's turned on.
