I think they are non-literal, and for a certain subset of the population that equals very non-intuitive.  Of the four people (myself included (iPod was my first MP3 player)) I witnessed using an iPod for the first time - all found it non-intuitive.

That's not to say we didn't find it easy after the initial hurdles, but Menu=back and Play=forward in menus?  You'll never convince me that is intuitive.  Not when you have Left (western backwards) and Right (western forwards) arrows so prominent on the front.

Say what? It's Menu=back and Center-click=forward in menus.

I misspoke, you are correct, but that dilutes the point not one bit.

EDIT:
I blame the sheer inescapable awesomeness of Rockbox for my fading familiarity with the Apple OS.  It's been years since I've seen it.  ;)

EDIT2:
Thank goddess.

Strife89:
If I pick up a friend's iPod to look through their music, I always hit Prev instead of Menu to go back up a step, and I always try to go back to the Now Playing screen with Play.

Rockbox's layout and keymaps just make too much sense in my opinion. The problem with newcomers to the firmware is that they are too used to the OF's keymaps/menu structure. Rockbox is designed by geeks (if you'll pardon the term) and for geeks who know what feels natural to them, rather then using solely what they were used to before Rockbox.

Eugene C:
Well, what we feel is natural is odd to someone else, and what others feel is natural is odd for us.

Perhaps it's only a matter of opinion?
