h140 - reformat and still -5 error message

My wonderful iriver h140 with rockbox froze on me.  I reset and got a -5 error message.  (I can boot with the usb though.) After trying to reinstall the latest rockbox with no luck on booting the iriver, I decided to reformat with swissknife.  I again downloaded the iriver and rockbox firmware plus the rockbox bootloader.  Still no luck. I get the same -5 message.  I am wondering if the iriver bootloader is corrupted?  I don't know how I can flash a new bootloader since I can't get to a menu.  I don't have much experience with these things.  Just trying anything I see on the forums that might work.  If anyone can give me some step-by-step instructions on a possible fix, I would greatly appreciate it.
