Plugged My Sansa Cable Into my Ipod
(1/1)
vsl2005:
I accidentally plugged my Sansa cable into my Ipod 5.5G 80GB. Running build r2554-100409.
Now my ipod triggers an error message in Windows that the unit is malfunctioned and should be replaced and Windows no longer recognizes the device. From Googling the problem, it looks like when people have plugged ipod cables into Sansa units, they've bricked the Sansa.
Reason I am asking here is that other than not being recognized by Windows the unit seems fine. Rockbox still boots into USB mode when plugged in and regular player mode when powered on, and the unit still charges.
Maybe there's a generic USB driver somewhere I could use or are the pins blown as I suspect?
I know it looks grim, but I appreciate any suggestions. Thanks as always for your great software!

You have probably damaged the pins used for the USB data. The pins for power and ground are probably still fine which is why charging and cable detection works. You will need to repair the dock connector.

Thanks Torne. Did I bend the pins or burn them, and associated circuitry, out?

How should I know? :) I can't see into your mp3 player from here ;)
I would *hope* that the USB data pins are sufficiently tolerant that you can't kill the electronics connected to them by misplugging something carrying normal levels of DC power, but it's impossible to know for sure.
