Additional Home button functionality on Sansa Clip

I have to say that I am very happy with the usability on the Clip(+), which is almost perfect. However, there's one point which could be improved. Right now, the Home button switches between the main menu and the actual page you did navigate to. It would be great if it could switch between main menu/actual page/plackback screen while the Clip does playback a track. Usually you want to go back to the playback screen and have to scroll all through the menu to select the "Now Playing" entry. It would be much more convenient to just press the home button one more time.

Actually, all other targets have a separate "resume" button (combo) for going from lists like the menu or the browser to the WPS (either start playback and go to the WPS if music is not playing or just go back to the WPS while music is playing). That's what you want if I understand correctly.

Looking at the Clip's keymap someone assigned the button combo Home+Select to it but it didn't work for me in the simulator (and the manual states something different which I highly doubt). Since I don't own the target I can't tell you if it works on the device but you could try and report back.

Actually, that combination does work on my Clip v1.  The information in the manual needs to be changed since it incorrectly reports that Play returns to the WPS if audio is playing.

I have some stuff running right now, but I'll get a patch together if I have time.  I did at least create a bug report for now:

On the Clip+ home & select is assigned to the key lock... so this Clip+ is lacking this functionality.

I think "return to WPS" is a useful and desirable action to have available.  Since the combination that's used for the Clip v1 is already taken, maybe Home + Play would be a good option.  I don't have any objection to Home doing a 3-way toggle, but the behavior would be a little more uniform if the action was mapped to a distinct button combination.

"Home" being a three way toggle would be problematic because "go to WPS" is also "resume playback" and if it were a three way toggle, it could easily trigger accidental resumes of playback if you're using it for its current functionality.

True.  I think Home+Play might be the cleanest option if it's free.  I haven't checked out the Clip+ button map in the source yet.

"Home + Play" might make a lot of sense, since "Play" is what would be used for that functionality if the player had better list navigation options.

Another idea that has been tossed around has been to use the volume buttons on the Clip (I assume the Clip+ has them too, don't know) for list navigation (but still be volume in the WPS) so that it frees up the top and bottom buttons in the circular area for more traditional uses. But, as can be seen, that idea wasn't chosen.

Home + Play would be fine too and make sense. So let's ask the developers to implement it that way for the Clip+. Developers?

Hi , is there any attempt to implement this feature for Clip+ ?
Rockboxed clip is just great, the only annoying thing is going back to WPS .. the only way i know of is to enter the main menu and select the now playing entry. The WPS is probably most used screen and I think there should be way how to ealisy get there from anywere.

I seem to recall that it's set to 'Home + Select' (as opposed to 'Select + Home', which is keylock).

I can't test right now, because I'm using my own keymap, but it's worth a shot...

I think a single button is better.  It's easier to press with one hand.  Even a long press of the Home key is preferred to two keys.

Anyone is free to mock up a keymap and submit it as a patch to the tracker for people to try.

Try my keymap if you like, [long home] does exactly that.
