Sansa e200 Flash RAM
« on: April 28, 2010, 05:48:49 PM »
I used to have a sansa e250 with rockbox on it. I found a setting on it that let me add RAM to it , and made it 500MB. This made it much faster =P. I got rid of my sansa e250 , and now I have an e280. I havn't used rockbox for a while, and when I went to go look for the setting to give it some extra RAM, I couldn't find it, I looked all over the setting's page...Could someone please tell me where to find that setting?
Thankyou So Much !!! ^^

There was never a setting to add RAM. RAM is something physical.

Your post basically makes no sense. Please, stop and try to remember carefully what you actually did, and ask again. A tip would be to look at the manual, so that you can see what Rockbox really does do, and maybe figure out what you're confusing with RAM.

Erm...there was a setting for it...I could make the flash hardrive to be RAM for my mp3, much like virtual RAM for computers when you set an amount of space on your hardrive and use it as virtual RAM. I don't know where I found the setting on the mp3, but the default setting is like 256MB flash RAM when I had my e250 ( which I then set to 500MB. )

There has never been a setting like this.  Indeed, the whole idea makes no sense on an audio player.  Rockbox does not use, and never has, virtual RAM

Odd...not sure what I was changing then =s  There was some sort of RAM setting , and I could change it to any amount ( 300MB, 500MB ) And for some reason it sped up my MP3...  I am not sure what I did , or was changing? It was a long while ago...

I really have no idea.  There has never been an option such as you describe.

Haha, great =P  time to close this topic down now... Although it would be a great idea to have... Sorry about all this =P        There really is no default RAM setting that I can change..? Hmm...

Rockbox uses RAM almost entirely for buffering audio. A relatively small portion of it is used for other things because it simply does not need (and would not benefit) from any more.

Buffering is what we call it when we copy audio off the disk into RAM for it to be used later. It wouldn't make much sense to then copy this back to the disk in the form of virtual memory use. This would actually slow things down significantly. So a setting for this could do nothing but make Rockbox slower and harm users.

Also, there's really not much going on that could be sped up, so maybe you could describe what you mean by making it "faster" to help people understand what you're actually talking about.

I was using it to play a couple games, and listen to music at the same time. It seemed to load everything faster, and even had a faster boot up time... But , if there was no option or anything to change the default RAM, then I am not sure what I did to change anything... =s

The only thing I can think of that would possibly do that was boosting the CPU, which isn't really recommended except for debugging purposes as far as I know... It's possible that this is what you were doing.

You mean like increasing the processor cache size that rockbox was using? If so, I changed it from around 256MB to 500MB... That might of been it , I am not sure =s

Nope - there is no cache, memory or otherwise that you can change.  Boosting means increasing the processor speed to full - it isn't a setable value.  It is automatic, and either on or off (you can temporarily manually change it through the debug menu).

Ja, ok =P Thankyou for everything!!! Right now I am wondering about a good video converter to make my .flv, .wmv videos into mpg or mpeg 2 so that I can play them ( this doesn't fit into this category, so I put it into plugin / viewers section )

Directory Cache ?
Might very well increase UI responsiveness.

Indeed, but that is on/off - no value setting anywhere.  I think this is destined to remain a mystery )
