I agree that it sounds as if the file system on your player is badly damaged.  I would not be surprised if this was the cause behind its refusal to update with the hex file you put in the player's root.

I unlocked the thread, removed the long post by the OP which I felt added nothing to the discussion of the original topic except to express that a hex file finally was accepted after repeated tries (but no apparent effort to follow the given suggestions re: filesystem.)

I'll lock and purge it again if it again becomes an argument.
