I thought rbutil could detect the classic and tell you that its not supported.  Or does that only work for some ipods?

It can. At least it should work, as I never tested it due to the lack of a Classic. However, from the initial post I'm wondering if the OP is using Rockbox Utility at all or trying to install using ipodpatcher.
