"unsupported physical sector size: 4096" ipod video 30 GB [SOLVED]
« on: April 19, 2010, 08:51:10 PM »
Hi all,

I've searched for the answer to this issue but I can't find it.

I've installed rockbox using the rockbox utility ( and I know it works because I succeeded on the same model a few moments ago). But when I eject the ipod and it restarts, I receive the error in the title.

I don't understand how the results can be different for the same model of ipod.

Can anyone help?

Have you tried the current build or just 3.5.1?

I'm using RockboxUtility-v1.2.6.

I then tried installing manually, but I think the issue is the bootloader rather than the rockbox build (at least I think so). I'm trying the current build now.

Yes but what version did you install?  I think a new enough build will not have this problem.

I tried it with the current build with the same result. I installed manually using the ipodpatcher to install the bootloader and then expanding the current build inside the ipod.

Ah yes the bootloaer.  Since ipodpatcher hasn't been updated in years, you're still getting an old bootloader.  You may need to see this thread:

Shouldn't the rockbox utility use the latest bootloader?

This issue has been resolved by using the bootloader at the link provided above.

It does. However, the bootloader in the thread linked hasn't been released, so Rockbox Utility doesn't use it -- it only uses the latest released bootloader, not the latest bootloader in svn. This is a security measure.

I've not yet had time to prepare, test and release new bootloaders for iPod; hopefully this will happen fairly soon.

Just for reference, this iPod must have previously had its hard drive replaced; the stock Apple drives do not have 4096 byte sectors. This is why you didn't have a problem with another iPod of the same model; the current bootloader works fine on all the drives Apple actually ship in the iPods.

I wasn't complaining about the bootloader used in the utility just curious as to why this one worked. I'd like to add that I really appreciate all the work that the rockbox developers do.

That's okay, I was just letting people know that a new release is underway. It wasn't taken as a complaint :)
