Little Delay when changing Tracks, Sansa e250
« on: April 18, 2010, 09:25:38 AM »
hey,
i'm new to rockbox and very happy with it.

its just a little thing, but when i listen to a track and press the button to switch to the next one,
there is a little delay. in a folder with few music in it , the delay isnt that big, so i think its a hardware/software issue and not a setting thing.

but i wanted to be sure.

thx in advance

A very slight delay seems to be pretty normal... I think it's because the PCM buffer will still have a little bit of data from the track being skipped left in it that will be played through before the next track's data begins.

Delays can also be caused by the disk (on hard drive based players) spinning up to refill the buffer if the track being skipped ahead to isn't buffered yet, and I'm sure there might be one or two other reasons for short delays that I can't think of at the moment...

Try to switch when you are close to the end of the current song.

10 seconds or so, what's important is that the beginning of the next song has already been loaded in the buffer.

The precise value depends of the bitrate of the files you play, and also if you have an e200v1 or v2 (the v1 has a much larger buffer because it has 32MB of ram, and the v2 only 8MB).

I imagine you would rather switch when you are at the beginning of the song (if you don't like it for example), but if this time you have no delay then it'll show that the delay is the time needed for the (beginning of the) next song to be loaded in the buffer and start decoding

If there's only 2 seconds (or less) left and you press next, Rockbox won't only skip the current song but also the next song :(

That sounds like a bug - if it isn't already on the tracker please add it.
