SOLVED: OSOS and r25635 vs. 3.5.1
« on: April 17, 2010, 12:25:19 PM »
Hello,

Is there anything specific to the release build (3.5.1 & 240GB) that would enable quick booting via OSOS (rockbox only firmware).  The 3.5.1 build boots fast via OSOS.  A build of r25635 (240GB & rockbox USB disabled) boots very slowly via OSOS.  Could it be a dircache rebuild issue, or is there a "define" to comment out or add?

I could build the latest release and try but wanted to be sure that something vital isn't missing, regardless of build.

Thank you!

Update: The solution is that there is a limit to the size of font that can be used for the %Fl if one desires a quick boot with OSOS.  The size of each font must be less than 10kb.  The initial font load from the config file is OK (60kb limit for quick boot).  It's the font loaded in the SBS and WPS that should be 10K or less to ensure quick booting.

"Thank you!" to the developers: Torme, gevaerts, and S_a_i_n_t who were *very* patient.

Update 2: rasher has a selection of small file size rockbox fonts: http://rasher.dk/rockbox/fonts/ and some seem to work with current builds.  Some are, basically, just letters, numbers and punctuation.  If that's enough for the system and WPS it might be worth a try.

Just to clarify, the font loading slowness is nothing to do with how rockbox is loaded. Loading from OSOS saves the same amount of time on all rockbox builds regardless of your settings.

The initial font load is *also* a problem; the default font on the larger-screen ipods is larger than 60kb and also causes slow booting.

The default font, as used by the default theme cabbiev2, and defined in \.rockbox\theme\cabbiev2.cfg is 15-Adobe-Helvetica.fnt which is 227K in size.

To clarify, some of rasher's small file size fonts are very simple: Latin letters, numbers and Cyrillic, for example and may not be suitable for a wide range of languages.

It's only 15-Adobe-Helvetica on players with 320x240 or 240x320 screens, though; cabbiev2 is built with different fonts/viewports/etc according to screen size. On players with smaller screens it uses a smaller version of helvetica, both in point size and file size, and it fits in the buffer :)

OSOS (rockbox only firmware) and no Rockbox bootloader.  It's either Rockbox or emergency disc mode (which works for file transfers and power/recharging).
