new theme series 320x240: photoSkins
« on: April 17, 2010, 03:03:44 AM »
Again trying to preserve a good theme idea, this theme series is based on the great jClix themes by P.I. Julius (imitating the iRiver Clix), which were done around 2006 for ipod video Rockbox patched builds. What I always liked about this themes, besides the beautiful original background images he chose (and, unfortunately, without known compatible licenses), is that, in my opinion, unlike other nice themes that aim to display big album art, or a lot of info, or a fancy functionality, this ones just had the very simple goal of making your WPS look good, letting the background image dominate the screen, avoiding to “disturb” this image as much as possible, but keeping the important info there.

Many elements are similar, and many others were changed, but the main difficulty was finding good background images with compatible CC-BY-SA licenses. I started collecting flickr.com photographs a while ago, which is sometimes frustrating and very time consuming (but fun), and since I sort of managed to “batch produce” the theme elements, I got a bit carried away and made 13 variations. Seems to be a lot, but the other thing I like about the series, is being able to use one theme layout idea on many different subjects and colors, for different tastes, moods, kinds of music, etc. This is the result:

Both the jClix themes and the iriver Clix themes were made for non touchscreen devices, but now that Rockbox can take over the D2 Cowons, this themes layout seem perfect for a touchscreen. I don’t have a Cowon D2 but I tried making these themes at least “touchscreen friendly”. It would be a great help if someone with a Cowon D2 that decides to give one of them a try, could leave here some feedback about the touchscreen behavior (the touch areas map is below)

I have a D2, and I will gladly try these out, but, I can't seem to find a way to download the themes?

Email upload confirming was pending, now they're up. Thanks, I'll appreciate your D2 feedback  ;)
(a recent build that supports multiple fonts and menu titles tags is needed)

The themes look very nice, and they load up fine, but the now playing screen does not load at all, it just comes up as the default grey screen.

I used the latest build.

They are working fine on my ipod video using different builds; I will have to build a Cowon D2 simulator to try and find out the problem, I will report back

Everything else works fine, it's just the wps that does not load at all.

The themes do look very nice though. Would it be possible to have a 24h clock on the now playing screen somewhere?

I won't be able to make a proper test until perhaps tomorrow, but I just built the D2 sim and the themes load fine. All the fonts used by the theme have to be in the fonts folder though, otherwise it wouldn't load, perhaps is that the problem? The fonts are:

15-Adobe-Helvetica.fnt
21-Adobe-Helvetica.fnt
16-Adobe-Helvetica.fnt
16-Adobe-Helvetica-Bold.fnt
09-Nedore.fnt

That shouldn't be difficult, when the themes are tuned for the D2 touchscreen I'll tell you how ;)

That was it, it all works perfectly now! Thanks ever so much, they all look very nice and work well on the D2.

ETA
There seems to be a minor bug in the touch volume, both + and - increases the volume. No big thing, one can always use the buttons on top of the D2.

Thanks a lot for testing it  ;) The volume problem you mentioned should be corrected by now so *everything* should be working for both the ipod video and the cowon d2, could you please confirm if it's OK on any of the themes?

If this is what you had in mind, what you would have to do is to insert the folowing text block in both the theme's .wps and .sbs files (.rockbox>wps>)

Code: [Select]
# 24h Time Displaying
%V|68|12|42|10|5|eaeaea|-|
%ac%cH:%cI
#

In case you don't know it, the "eaeaea" parameter above is the text color, so probably you should put there the same value you'll find in the "battery"  text block, to make everything match.

It could really be inserted anywhere, but if you want to keep the order you could put it after the "Shuffle" text block.

If you have any questions, just let me know

[Edit] I tried placing it in other places but in my opinion it didn't look good

That's very slick.  Nice work supporting the D2's touch interface too!
