Any recent reports of flac playback skipping?
« on: April 12, 2010, 07:53:20 PM »
I have a 120GB iPod Video 5.5 and have been running into problems with flac tracks skipping ahead to the next song midway through the current song.  Not all the time, but after a few/several songs it will happen.  Playback with ogg (Q6) files has no problems.  I always thought ogg required more processing effort than flac, so was surprised to see this.

I am using an unsupported build posted by nugged (I think, need to confirm that actually), which I needed to get around a 4096 sector error.

However, my question is a general one:  is flac playback on iPods known to have problems at times?  If it is stable with official builds, I'll look into building a current build with just the sector changes needed and see if things get better.

Oh yeah, I did reset my settings to the default after this happened.  However, the problem persists.

nugged's build is pretty old and includes a large number of unsupported patches (many of which have since been improved or even committed). Specifically it includes one patch which modifies the clock frequencies used by the iPod's processor, and changes the way that the frequency is altered...

I have posted a test build in the official test build forum which should support your 120GB drive, and is based on the current svn code: http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=24439.0
There are no other changes in this build, so it's a much better test. As a bonus, if enough people test this and report success, it will be committed and you will not need to use a custom build at all.

Flac playback should be perfectly stable, as far as I know.

Thanks!  I will definitely give it a try and report back!

Update:  For anyone reading this, please visit torne's thread (linked to in his post above mine).  His test build fixed the playback issues I was having.
