possible corruption?
« on: April 12, 2010, 01:36:26 PM »
I have had Rockbox firmware loaded on a Sansa r250 mp3 player for over a year now and have LOVED the interface compared to the crappy Sansa one.  All has worked good since day one, but I seem to be running into an issue here.

I mainly listen to talk show mp3s that are about3-4hrs in length. I have it set up so when I turn the unit off, it automatically creates a bookmark. I can then also easily resume playback when I turn it back on.

So, here is where I have recently run into an issue;  sometimes if I want to play another mp3 file on the unit while I am playing one of my talk show mp3s, it goes to the last bookmark created (usually the talk show mp3) instead of going to that mp3 file. If I try to go to another mp3, it still goes to the last bookmark created. If I delete or fast forward to the end of the talk show mp3, then it will allow me to go to another mp3.

I'm thinking something is corrupted here so I went ahead and copied all files from its internal memory (2GB) to a folder on my desktop PC. Was then gonna maybe format or clean all files off the Sansa internal memory and try to start fresh.

I haven't totally done it yet, but if I erase all files on the Sansa drive, can I somehow corrupt the rockbox firmware? Or should I delete everything except certain files? .txt, .sdk, .link, .bmark, etc.

I see a .rockbox folder in there that I'm thinking is probably the main folder not to mess with or delete. ANy other suggestion on how to maybe start fresh so I can get it to operate better?

You can safely remove the .rockbox folder as long as you put a new copy of it back on (either with Rockbox Utility or manually from a .zip file) when you're done your reformatting. You may want to save your configuration settings on your device first (Settings -> Manage Settings -> Save .cfg file, give it a name, then copy the newly saved settings file off your device onto your computer somewhere) before formatting it so you don't lose them and have to reconfigure your device just how you want it from the default state again.

Also, before you reformat, you may with to try resetting your settings (Settings -> Manage Settings -> Reset Settings, again you'll probably want to save a copy of your current settings first) and see if that makes a difference. It may be that something in the way your device is currently configured is causing your problem if it doesn't happen with the default settings.

OK, I took your suggestion and decided to try to "reset" the settings first before messing around with formatting it. This appears to have worked as selecting another mp3 track will work properly. Thanks for the info.

You're welcome. Hopefully you can figure out what setting(s) you had set that cause that problem if it happens again, then you can just change the appropriate setting(s) back rather than having to reset all settings.
