Uploading video on the move to an iRiver H300 series, is it possible?
« on: April 06, 2010, 07:53:51 AM »
May I take this opportunity to say WELL DONE ROCKBOX, YOUR SOFTWARE RULES.

Right-

I was just thinking if it could amaze me further.

I am looking to use a video camera to record a short film and use a camera which would normally have to be linked to a PC with USB to take all of the footage off so that more footage could be shot. I.e. There's only 2 hours capacity on the camera after which I'd have to go home again and upload it to my PC to come out shooting again. I was wondering if, with rockbox now installed on my iRiver H340 whether or not the footage could be uploaded straight onto my iRiver (through a USB lead, obviously), therefore giving me the freedom to stay out on the move and shoot more footage.

Essentially what I'm asking is whether or not I could transfer mpeg4s from a FLIP camera straight to the iRiver on the move, without using a computer medium (PC/mac)

I haven't yet bought the camera but the one I'm thinking of in this example is a Flip UltraHD (which has flash memory and no capability to use a removeable memory source e.g. memory card).

Looking forward to the answer, although it seems too good to be true 8)

The OF of the iRiver H300 series already has USB host, so provided the camera identifies itself as UMS then you *should* be okay.

Thankyou for the quick reply.

I tried using a (very budget) usb docking station with the iRiver and it didn't work so I was sceptical about whether it could work or not.

I guess the only way may be to suck it and see.

Incidentally if it helps, i'm using the 1.30 version of the firmware hex file patched.

If anybody has this set-up and is using it with other USB devices please let me know.  ;D

As this is a feature of the H300's original firmware, it's not really on-topic for these forums.  But you will at least need to ensure that the video camera exposes itself as a standard USB mass storage device in order for there to be a chance that the H300 can copy files from it.

You may have more luck at a forum dedicated to the iriver devices - e.g. http://www.misticriver.com/

As linuxstb says Mistic River is the place to go - while making the USB host work in Rockbox has been discussed http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/UsbOnTheGoSupport it is not supported at present.

Be warned that the USB host on the H300 is USB1.1 only - slow!
I used it once - just to prove a point.

I also has a suspicion (vague memory) that that the USB host is not supported on the US models.

Maybe one of those USB-USB copy dongles might do the trick for you - obviously with the H300 still running Rockbox (struggling to stay on topic ;-)

Multiplex, your vague memory is correct: USB On The Go (also known as USBOTG) is not available on US models of the H300 series.  The other models of the iriver H300 have a chip on the motherboard dedicated to this function, while the US model was given the feature of Digital Rights Management instead.

So US models cannot operate as a host for USB, only as a remote device.  This was a disappointment to me, too.
