320x240x16 iPod Video Theme (Terminal) - Feedback Request
« on: April 05, 2010, 08:40:42 PM »
Was wanting to make a theme that was terminal/ncurses looking after looking through google images for ideas I stumbled across a screenshot of VLC ncurses and thought that layout would work perfectly for the iPod Video here is the result.

Main Screen Nothing Playing

Recording Screen

While Playing Screen Unlocked... Shows Playlist and Battery %

While Playing Screen Locked... Shows Song Details, Album Art, and Time
Edit: If you wanted to stick to a true terminal feel it wouldn't be that hard to remove the album art and list more info/statistics instead :)

Random Menu Screenshot

Before I post this under the themes gallery I would really appreciate some feedback/suggestions

Notes:
I was wanting to have the details/album art appear on the main menu screen when locked but it is rather buggy http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=24409.0

I was also wanting to have the details information displayed if the playlist was empty but I dont see anyway to get this working.

The WPS song details on lock/playlist unlocked can easily be switched with a comment/uncomment if you want.

Edit: I am not sure if its my iPod or all but the color is not nearly as vibrant on the iPod screen #55ff00 if someone knows of a better shade that comes out vibrant please let me know.

Edit: Reworking this theme quite a bit just stuck on what information to put on the details section in place of the album art since I am moving it..... anyone have any suggestions I am looking at Track: 1/??, play count, rating, and auto score but they dont seem to be working for me... always display 0.... I am guessing they are based on the database which I have yet to initialize.

UPDATED VERSION SS:

Main Menu Screen

Rockbox Info... 30kb Ram Usage

While Playing Screen.... Playing

While Playing Screen... Paused

While Playing Screen... Hold On

Once again any suggestions / comments would be appreciated... will probably upload this theme later tonight after I finish tweaking it.

Theme is now uploaded just waiting for some feedback :)

I like this theme but when I use it it does not look like what you described.

What I see when a song is playing:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
track#: Song Title
Artist
Album

current time of song/total song time                          total playlist time
avg bit (id3v2.3)
(a graphic bar showing where the song counter is)
(a peek meter)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am unable to change anything to look like what you are describing.  :'(

Any ideas?

Thanks.

What you're seeing is the fallback default rockbox theme that appears when the theme you're trying to use fails to load for some reason. I'm guessing you're either missing a font (Adobe Helvetica 15) or the rockbox version you have installed on your iPod is the 3.5.1 release and not the current build (r25758) required by this theme, or both. Download and install the current build and the font pack and all your problems will magically disappear :)

Yes, I am currently using the 3.5.1 release.

Oh, I see what you saying. This theme, as specified on the "terminal" theme page, states that it only works with the current build and NOT the 3.5.1 release. I did not see until you mentioned that.

Are there any issues with using the current build? Is it safe  ;)

The current builds should, more often than not, be fine, especially if you're installing to a target that's been supported for a while and is considered a stable target.

How hard would it be to add the hard drive indicator to the various screens?

I am in the process of updating the theme I will probably see if i can add the tag in but comment it out because I really don't see much use for it you can then uncomment it to use it.

I just would like to know when the hard drive is hitting.  Especially after I do a database update and it needs to go though all 5000+ songs I have on my iPod... It takes a while to finish... :)

Since they did an automated update on all themes to fix the issues I dont need to mess with them... but here is the code you can add to your theme

If you are using version 3.6
###HDD Activity###
%?lh<%Vdq|%Vdp>
%Vl|q|240|0|30|15|1|000000|55ff00|
HDD
%Vl|p|240|0|30|15|1|000000|55ff00|

or

If you are using Current Build
###HDD Activity###
%?lh<%Vd(q)|%Vd(p)>
%Vl(q,240,0,30,15,1) %Vf(000000) %Vb(55ff00)
HDD
%Vl(p,240,0,30,15,1) %Vf(000000) %Vb(55ff00)

Just put the code under "Rockbox Media Player" in both the SBS and WPS file... edit them with notepad.

Hello jtrodriguez!
I really like your theme! The thing that I call "nothing redundant". Though I'd like to write some words as a feedback =)

1. The navigation is not clear to me. I mean how is the touchscreen divided when you are in "playing right now" mode or in other ones? It is like a "make a guess" game when I press some part of the screen =)

2. I'm a "rating fan". What I mean is that the most important button I need is "*". I do not need those "1-100" rating points, only the one or two (the second button would be "dislike" or "permanent delete" to instantly remove the track from the pleer if I dislike it). Is that possible? That would be really great! (I really need it!!!)

3. There is a functionality of "browse the track" in my pleer. When the track is played I can take the stylus and press it somewhere on the track line to chose the moment I would like to listen the track from. Really useful!

4. I'm using COWON D2+ (just bought it actually) and there is one function "out of the box". It is called "add bookmark". Often I listen "long live sets" of different DJ's. These ones may last an hour or two. And using this function I can put exact bookmarks (for example 15th and 47th minutes). It is very useful! Later I can browse not only "my favourite songs" but "the best moments" as well!

Though I understand these tasks are not ordinary at all, but could you please comment if this is possible and if you are interested in implementing such functionality?

Again, great work man! I'm using your theme with pleasure!

I designed the theme for iPod Video was trying to update it for Cowon D2 but the emulator gave me a serious headache so I just gave up on it... maybe ill try to mess with it again later.

When you're playing a song, in the bottom tracklist area there is a blank space where the next song in order is supposed to show but instead the one after it is shown. You click next track and it goes to the right song in queue but it appears as if the one after it was supposed to play because the tracklist skips showing it.

Can this be fixed. I'm using an iPod Video and if you play a song and look at tracklist you'll see there is space for one more track to show at the top.

EDIT: If you want something done right you do it yourself. I've gone and fixed this myself. The following part appears and shows correctly:

So this fixes the iPod Video version at least here: http://themes.rockbox.org/index.php?themeid=1067&target=ipodvideo

Replace your terminal.wps theme file with this: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/13594881/Rockbox%20Terminal%20Theme%20Patch/terminal.wps

or get the entire fixed theme here: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/13594881/Rockbox%20Terminal%20Theme%20Patch/Terminal.zip

Code: [Select]
###Play List###
%Vl(b,15,134,290,100,1)%Vf(55ff00)%Vb(000000)
%Vp(1, %?it<%pp - %ia - %it|%pp - %fn>)

The last line had a space character on the end. I have removed the space character; aren't I clever and resourceful. Please enjoy and I hope the Terminal theme page gets updated with this. I'll message some people to get that going.
