Long booting time using big font files like unifont
« on: April 03, 2010, 06:04:45 AM »
It's good to see that this old problem with big font files is accepted as a bug (FS#11168). I'm afraid most of the users who are affected by this problem won't understand how to temporary fix this issue for themself until an "official" bugfix comes out (if at all).

The temporary fix is "use a font smaller than 60KB" :)

This is only true for a part of the users.

There's no font below 60kB which supports e.g. CJK. Those users don't have the choice to switch to a smaller font (seeing only square boxes is not an alternativ).
The temporary fix in this case is to increment the font buffer as you proposed it in a comment in Flyspray and it was also proposed by another guy some years ago. I don't think he's still around, but anyway, thanks to that guy. His patch was a noticeable improvement for me.

You can also remove glyphs that you don't use to cut down the size of the font file.  See here for the glyph coverage of different fonts in Rockbox.

See CreateFonts for info on creating your own Rockbox fonts.

Creating optimized fonts for different language settings in rockbox might be a good solution.  Unifont for people who want everything, leaner fonts based on the language selection for everyone else.
