sansa e260 v2 - doom questions
« on: April 02, 2010, 12:48:53 AM »
This is my only mp3 player. I got it right before I switched from M$ to linux/ubuntu OS. The OF for this player is designed for M$ - and files are not read in linux...but it does mount and shows the menu listings! I installed the new (3.5.1) Rockbox (I'm a NOOB) this week. Rockbox seems to run fine but with no USB support I still cant manage my music files ... yet ;) . I was thrilled to see a long list of games including doom. Doom has issues.  I searched the bug list and this forum for info but much is older... FWIW I have ~ 250MB free on this 4GB player after the Rockbox install.

My problem with Doom is listed in the current bugs = Data Abort @ 30........something. This happens every time at the start of level 2 using the default freedoom/doomf.wad. The first time it happened I had to uninstall & delete Rockbox & re-install = not a big deal really with the new install mgr. The second time it only took a hard reboot. I also installed doom1.wad, doom2.wad, plutonia.wad, & tnt.wad. Today I played doom1 and it loaded some code and died. I then tried doom2.wad and it ran GREAT! ... until I got to about level 4, where I got the same "Data Abort @ 30...." msg. I restarted the 'saved game' and it put me back to the last level. then it did it again at the exact same point. I added the plutonia & tnt wads because they were listed as OK in the Sansa/Doom wiki but haven't tried them yet.

My questions...
1. Is this a free memory issue? If I delete some music and free up space will doom run better/longer?
2. The Bug Listing says Freedoom will fail at this point ALWAYS. It looks like Doom 2:Hell On Earth is going to fail at an exact point in the game too. Are there some known wads that will play thru to the end?
3. Are there some basic old wads that should be avoided?
4. Recommended wads?
5. Is this an issue that I must leave in the hands of those excellent coders out there and hope one of them decides this problem needs attention? (one of my best friends writes code = he's a fanatic! and shouldnt be disturbed when he's in the groove :)  )

Theres not enough RAM on the e200v2 to play larger maps in Doom.  They'll run out of RAM and then crash.  I don't know enough about the Doom source code to say if its easily fixed or not.

The solution was to go find a bunch of game wads - so far I've installed 19 different wads that perform well. Most are single level or sometimes up to 3. That gives me well over 20 levels to play on. Very fun. Kudos to the developers on this one!!!

FWIW a bunch of singleplayer wads at this site were very good.
