PictureFlow display on Clip series devices.
« on: March 31, 2010, 07:13:32 AM »
The Sansa Clip series players have a unique issue which surfaces in almost all plugins as a result of its display. The screen is essentially just monochrome, except that the top 1/4 of the screen goes through a yellow filter while the lower 3/4 go through a teal filter. There's also about a 2px gap between the sections, and so anything displayed over the gap a) has an ugly black line through it and b) changes colour. Here's a simulator shot of PictureFlow:

(note that the Clip does not display shades as shown here; it flickers to approximate them)

There's already a setting in the UI to enable and disable album title display, but for the Clip it would really look a whole lot better if the album title displayed in the top 16px, with the album art constrained to the bottom 48px, for 64px total (with a theoretical "height" of 66px, meaning the image can sit flush with the top of the "blue" section, the gap provides its own padding). Obviously this might make the reflection look terrible, or even necessitate that it be turned off entirely, but it would still look better than it does now.

There should be a setting to display the album title at the top or the bottom as well as to not display it at all, you could try changing that setting to display the title at the top and see whether it adjusts it well enough or not...

I did try that, but unfortunately it doesn't change the position of the album art at all; the text is displayed in the top (yellow) area, but simply overlaid over the album art.

Just a thought: is there any way to physically remove the filter(s) or make a single color filter?

Looking into the hardware a little bit, I doubt something like that would at all be possible without completely dismantling the OLED display (which is probably not recommended...)

Looking here (SansaClip wiki page) the screen seems to be one of these, which is a 128x96 pixel Yellow/Blue split OLED display.

Its an OLED, not an LCD.  There is no filter.
