sansa c200 force boot into rockbox?
« on: March 23, 2010, 02:43:32 AM »
I've done a search, not quite sure what terms to use though, so possibly missed an obvious post...

i've got a sansa c200 running rockbox v3.3 (installed from current build).

i'm wondering if i can force boot into rockbox, in the following situations:

iv'e got an ac power -> usb adaptor, when i plug it in, it automatically turns on, runs the rockbox screen, then goes to the origional firmware. at the moment, to get it to run rockbox while plugged in, i have to start it first, and then plug it in once it's up and running.

when it's turned off while plugged in, and i turn it on, it does the same thing as above, unless i unplug it, turn it on and plug it back in.

also, is there a way to completely remove the origional firmware?

I can't really guess what "rockbox v3.3 (installed from current build)" is supposed to mean, but it seems that you're using an outdated bootloader. The new bootloader (which was released in July 2009) doesn't boot to the OF anymore for USB.

um, i downloaded the c200 .zip file from "current builds', when i looked in the info file, i thought it said it was version 3.3, maybe i mis read this...

i tried reinstalling version 5.3.1 and 'current build' using the auto installer, it still does the same thing (with both versions)

from your response, with current builds, when i plug it in turned off, it should load directly into rock box?

Update the bootloader, as well.
Gevaerts reply was hinting at this.

The current version is 3.5.1, but you will note that gevaerts said that you need to update the bootloader, and not the build.  This can be done from Rockbox Utility

sorry, i wasn't very clear
yes i have installed both rockbox 3.5.1 and the newest bootloader from the utility. same results

i would attempt to do it again, to double check, but when i start up the utility now, i get this error:
Your configuration is invalid. This is most likely due to a changed device path. The configuration dialog will now open to allow you to correct the problem. (i confirm that the player is mounted, and i can access the device in read only)

i am using the linux version (crunchbang, based on ubuntu 9.04)

it has loaded the player as read only (even as root), not sure what i've done.

You need to sort that out first, as clearly nothing can be installed without write access.  Linux usually refuses to mount read write when there are errors on the disk, so try running fsck.vfat on it.

ok i got it sorted.

don't know what was wrong with it (i bought it with RB already installed)

formatted the drive, reinstalled origional firmware, made sure it was in msc mode, started rbutil and installed as root, and it seemed to work, and now when i plug it in, it starts straight into rockbox.

it seems i have one of those weird ones that are actually a V1 machine, with 2 written on the hardware. strange. oh well

thanks for your help
