Iriver H10 Scroll pad randomly moving up and down menu

I decided to update my H10 to the latest version of Rockbox using the installer, however this did not work correctly and I ended up with the systems file missing problem, this was not a total problem as I restored the Iriver software via Iriver Manager. So I have resorted to installing Rockbox manually. This has gone ok and Rock box has installed but the scroll function has gone manic and just keeps moving up and down as if the buttons are stuck on. This does not happen if I use the Iriver firm ware and did not happen on my previous Rockbox install so its not the player at fault. I thought that perhaps this was a firm ware problem and have tried installing each version back to 3.2 so I guess the problem must lie in the Rockbox boot loader which is version 6 . I have down loaded the software from the link in the Rock Box on line manual. Can anyone shed some light on a solution to this ?.

A couple of other points which may be of no value :

The Iriver site installed v2.51 firmware which I think is MTP

I then reinstalled the original firm ware which is 2.53E, which is UMS (I had backed it up previously).

Only the UMS Rockbox firm ware boots up, if I try installing a MTP version I get a system file missing issue.

There have been one or two reports of this in the past, and it seemed to be related to battery - either when the battery was very low or failing.  What is yours like?

Hi, thanks for your reply, I would say that the battery is ok, and I have swapped out the battery for a spare one that is also ok and I get the same problem. Both are original batteries but they hold their charge ok. The problem only started occurring after the firmware upgrade, prior to that I had 2 years of trouble free Rockbox use.

What version bootloader did you have before?

That's a good question unfortunately I do not know. Despite backing up the I-River firmware and boot loader I never got round to backing up the working Rock box boot loader and I never took much interest in the version number whilst it worked, but it would have been a good couple of years old.

Myself I'm no expert at all, but I kind of suspect that the Rock box boat loader is the problem. Is there somewhere to down load boot loader versions prior to version 6. I've found achieves for the Firmware but not the boot loader.

I just want to note as an H10 owner myself that I never had any issues with the version 6 bootloader, so I wouldn't be too quick to blame the problems on the bootloader...

Now, mind you, I'm also not using the stock battery anymore since I used to have this issue when I had the old battery and the voltage dropped too low.

I would imagine that you should probably replace the battery with a new one regardless of how well they still seem to hold a charge, if both batteries you tested were stock batteries they're probably old enough to cause this kind of problem anyway.

Well I do have a third non i - river new battery which I charged up last night and fitted today, same result, so I kind of think that discounts the battery.

Hm... point seems to go to you on this one so far... I'm sorry I can't be of any help. I just wanted to clear up the potential blame being on the bootloader since I haven't had issues with it...

I have to guess that you have an iriver H10 5 or 6 GB (given the OF versions you mentioned in your first post, since I'm pretty sure the 20GB only went up to version 2.51). Mine is a 20GB, I'm not sure whether that would really make that much of a difference, but it might...

I don't see how that discounts the battery without further information - how old is this battery you just charged up?

There are dozens of people, at a minimum, who've used this bootloader without any problems. Meanwhile, this is a problem known to associate specifically with older batteries. The important part isn't who made them, but how old they are.

Even if the battery ends up absolutely ruled out (something that doesn't seem to have been done particularly effectively - I don't see any battery benches showing the state of the battery) it's still going to end up being something specific to your player, meaning you're the only person who can debug it.

Karashata - thanks for your help, its a 6gb model.

LLorean - Like I said I'm no expert and a battery bench test is something I'm not familiar with, if its run whilst in Rockbox I cannot do it any way as the menu bar goes down the page then up the page and back again like a yo yo without stopping. If you can tell me how to do it I would appreciate your advice. The newer battery is about a year old. I got it new as a back up but had no reason to use and its been in storage.

I do not have the skills required to de-bug Rockbox on my player if that what it does come down to and in that eventuality I would have to fall back on the Iriver firm ware which would be a shame, Rockbox is streets ahead. Given that, eliminating the Bootloader as a source of the problem  ( its the only un-restored piece of software on there) is a logical step for a layman, even if only to eliminate the possibility.

 Finally found the archive with the version 5 boot loader on, down loaded it and copied it across to my H10. Problem solved straight away. No problem with the battery at all, version 6 boot loader is the problem for certain, at least on my 6GB H10.
