Strange menu behaviour
« on: March 22, 2010, 09:29:41 AM »
I have just moved onto using daily builds instead of the stable release and I have noticed something a bit strange since the first one I used (r25287)

When the display goes off and then I touch the click-wheel to bring it back up the menu appears for a fraction of a second then disappears then doesn't appear again until I run my finger around the click-wheel. Is this a new feature to help improve some aspect of Rockbox? I've had a search in the forums but couldn't see anything that referred to it.

I don't have an H320 (mine is an iPod video) and it happened on three builds that I have tried today (25287, 25291 and 25292). It happened on all three but not on 3.5.1 which I have gone back to.

It doesn't affect the now playing screen as you describe it, it happens when you go back to one of the menus, the screen has gone off then you bring the menu back up. The screen is blank until you rub the click-wheel then it appears again.

If there's something I've missed then I'm sorry but it has never happened on 3.5 or 3.5.1

maybe you'd better stick to the stable releases. Why bother?

Why bother?
Because the stable releases are stable because people use the daily releases (which are pretty darn stable) and report problems.

I've been using Rockbox for going on four years now, and can count the problematic daily releases I've used on one hand.

In the other thread you said it didn't happen to you on "3.5".  Here you say "3.5.1".  Are both statement correct or is one a fat-finger?

I think the two should be identical.

I have this problem too. I think it started happening sometime after friday. I just updated to the latest daily build today and I have this problem. I noticed the status bar doesn't show up on the nClix theme too. I did not update the nClix theme so, its not the problem.

I'm using iPod nano 2G.

If thursday worked, then this seems like a good guess:

yep, thats the one. I'm tracking it down but running low on time at the moment. I'll revert it before the weekend if it cant be fixed.

you say the menu appears then dissapears just about instantly?

Using PMs to annoy devs about bugs/patches is not a good way to have the issue looked at.

Yes it does but appears again as soon as you spin the click-wheel. It's never happened before so thought it was maybe a new feature but it doesn't seem right so thought it best to mention it.

JdGordon reverted r25271 this morning, so try a current build.

Just tried r25301 and the menus are fine again. Thanks for fixing it.

Just a quick question about updating daily builds. Rather than adding the whole ".rockbox" folder to my iPod is it possible just to add the "rockbox.ipod" file to get the benefit of the update or does the entire folder have to be added each time?

It depends what was changed - codecs, plugins etc all have to match the main binary, so it is best just to update the whole thing.  As you are just overwriting with the contents of the zip, this doesn't really take any longer and doesn't affect settings etc., so there isn't really any reason not to, and it avoids problems.

That's fine. The thing is I don't keep the very basic themes like boxes and rockbox original on my iPod so to keep things as I like them I delete the backdrops, wps and theme folders from the build before I transfer them to my player but I'll do that to make sure nothing goes wrong.
