irregular problem that needs a reset
« on: March 15, 2010, 09:20:43 AM »
I hope I'm OK to post this here. I've had a look on the flyspray list of problems but I couldn't see it and never having used flyspray I'm a bit unsure of how it works.

The problem I have come across is when the player gets switched on it's fine for a short while, but after a while time indicator in the top right just shows "-:--" and I can't scroll through the menus. A reset is then needed to fix it and then everything works OK for a while.

I couldn't see a pattern to it but then I noticed that it happens a lot when I have just unplugged the player from charging (I top up regularly rather than running the battery flat). Sometimes I charge from the wall, other times from USB (disk mode and multimedia mode by pressing and holding the menu button). It may well have happened just by switching on from pwer off but most of the times it's been after charging up.

I am using version 3.5.1. I don't remember this happening with 3.5 and certainly never with version 3.4. Has anyone else experienced this rather strange behaviour? It's strange that it only seems to happen after charging but I'm sure it has happened when just switching on from power down.

PAUL

EDIT: I'm going to try a daily build and see if the problem reoccurs but I am interested to know if anyone else has had this problem.

UPDATE: Installed daily build r25204 and it has happened again. Had the player in disk mode to transfer the build. When I powered up it was fine but after a minute the time went back to -:-- on the main screen and I've had to do a reset.

Try booting Apple's firmware when this happens.  Has the time become unset there too?

I tried that and the OF clock is fine. After it has happened a reset sorts it but it has only started happening in the last two weeks.

This is really a poorly worded two-part question.  ;)
1 - Is "reset" the correct pedantic term for what you're doing?  (Menu+Select hard reset) or do you mean "shutdown and reboot cleanly"?
2 - Is the process you're using to boot into the Apple OF "fixing the clock" temporarily?

I am pressing and holding Menu+select.

I haven't been going back into the OF usually, just rebooting Rockbox. It was Chronon's suggestion to see if it affected the OF as well as Rockbox.

Touch wood, it hasn't happened today. I have gone back to release 3.5.1 after trying a couple of daily builds. It happened with one daily build but the other but I wasn't using it for long.

I told you my questions were poorly worded!  ;)

Ok, I guess what I'm getting at is that the method you use to "fix" the problem is the same method you're using to get to the OF?  If so we'd expect a cursiorary look at the OF to be fine.

Since (and only since) nobody else is reporting this problem my first suspicion is hardware.  That being said I would likely not notice this sort of error myself, as I never look at my iPod's clock.

Therefore, IMHO, the only proper test as to if this is Rockbox or Hardware is for you to "take one for the team" and use the Apple firmware for a few days/weeks and see if the problem reappears.  ;)

I'm hoping I won't have to; touch wood this hasn't happened for the last two days so I'm keeping my fingers crossed it won't again.

EDIT - Posting on 1st April and this has happened three times in the last two days :(. It seems I'm the only one suffering from this but I will wait until release 3.6 to see if it gets fixed.
