Menu for changing button mapping?
(1/1)
Chadwick Joanathan:
Hello,
I just bought a Gigabeat F40 and started using Rockbox on it. So far I'm very impressed.
Only one thing seems to be missing though: a button mapping configuration screen. I did a forum search and as recent as 2009 the suggestion was "edit and recompile the code" (http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=20331.0). Although I can compile code, I find this terribly inconveniencing. Is there really no way to change the button mapping from inside the player itself?
Assuming there isn't: what's the status of this, development-wise? Is there anyone working on it? Is/are there patch(es)? Would a patch to add this feature be accepted?
For the curious: I ran into this because the default mapping for the up/down buttons is to lower/raise the volume. This would be reasonable if it didn't already have buttons on the side dedicated to raising and lowering the volume. I'd much rather use the extra buttons to be able to fast-forward/rewind without the risk of skipping tracks. And if I'm going that far, my personal taste is to make the up/down buttons skip tracks and make the left/right buttons do rw/ff.
Thanks for listening,
- Chad

Hi Chad,
I personally think that this requested feature will not gain any benefit for the casual user. I think that there is a tendency to avoid feature bloat in Rockbox, so this feature request has probably low chances of being accepted. You are encouraged to discuss this over IRC, though.
The F40 have many buttons in comparison to other players, thus there's indeed room for customization, but since TMHO the Rockbox software has so many key bindings, having the possibility to change them will make things more complicated than the way they are now.
If you think there's a better way to organize the key mappings, you are encourage to describe it in details in this forum thread (like you just did), or better - post a patch in Flyspray. If you are not a programmer, you can ask one of the developers to create such patch for you. Try to find which developers uses this player, and ask for their opinion. I believe they will be happy to commit your patch if it is of any benefit.
Goodluck!

It would not be accepted.
Chadwick Joanathan:
tomers, I'll be sure to drop by IRC and maybe contact some developers when I get the chance.
Thank you both for the info and advice.
