The only reliable way to determine the version of the Fuze is to check the firmware revision of the firmware.  The Fuze v1 firmware version starts with V01 and the v2 starts with V02.

Markings on the case of the Fuze or the packaging have been known to be inaccurate.

Hope you got a V1. I was lucky enough to get a V1 refurb just the other day. Was really not all that hopeful, but I guess they're still out there.

firmware version v02.02.28A

I wonder if there is a way to help in the process of the sansa fuze v2 port?

If you can spare to donate it, you can ask around and see if any of the developers need a V2.  That might help the progress of getting a working beta for the V2.  Then you can order another one and once again hope for a V1.

Overall, the odds of getting a Fuze V1 from the various merchants that sell refurbs seems to be about 50/50 at the moment.

hopefully i have a slightly verified solution for finding a v1 fuze.

my first fuze was a v1, it was an 8GB fuze that came packed with a 4GB microsd card (marketed as a 12GB fuze)

my second fuze was also a "12GB" one and was a v1.

my conclusion therefore is that there was perhaps a whole batch of "12GB" fuzes that are v1.

please let me know if anyone got a v2 through this way and i will consider my theory disproved.

i found one left on the internet:
