Weird database entries after update on Ipod video 30gb
« on: March 14, 2010, 12:54:07 PM »
Hi there,
I just put some music on my Ipod and tried to update the database.
The new album hasnt been added to the database, but now i have a lot of weird entries that look like code all in capital letters. I looked in the album-folder and the first 'albums' were:
"$CASESENSITIVE=NO  $DELIMITE" and "#FIRST EDITED BY JEFF HANNA o"
in these folders i found more weird files like "TOR v3.1  #Prepared by Drenger" with a playtime of 27863:57, unplayable ofcourse.
My database is full with entries like these -  what the hell went wrong?

oh and by the way rockbox rocks  ;D

Strange.  I wonder if you might have a damaged file system.

Could this be HTML-code? I really dont  know what HTML looks like, but there are some entries like CRIMSON-EDITOR which is a HTML-editor i think.
If i start the ipod without rockbox everything looks normal. How did the code end up in my database?

And TOR is a proxy network used for anonymizing internet traffic.  Some of that stuff from your original post looks like snippets from this file: http://it.hule.harryda.se/itda06/matjan/Program/Crimson%20Editor/spec/hlsl.spc

It seems like a config file for Crimson Editor.  The fact that this is appearing in Rockbox's database suggests to me that there is probably some corruption of the file system (files being wrongly listed in the FAT).  Can you try to check the partition for errors (chkdsk on a Windows system, or fsck.vfat on a Linux system)?  Consult the "help" for each tool to make sure of how to call it so that it corrects errors that it finds.

i just ran chkdsk /r (it actually found errors) and initialized the database. Still the same entries.

Can you use a metadata tagging application (such as mp3tag) to check the metadata of the files on your player?

alright this time the only suspicious thing i found was again some kind of code (hex?)
as a comment of 59 songs. The rest seems pretty normal.
e: the songs cant be connected to each other... except half of them i know i listened to the days before it happened. but there are some songs i didnt even listen to once.

Hmph.  No clear explanation there.

You can try deleting all of the *.tcd files in the .rockbox directory on your player and try initializing again.  I am at a loss to explain how these random entries ended up in Rockbox's database.

that didn't help  :-\

e: alright i think i know what caused this. Before I had these entries I put a folder on my Ipod which I used for backup data ~3.5GB.
I just deleted that folder and *ding* the entries were gone. In that folder I had lots of different files: pictures, textdocs, games etc.. also a Crimson Editor. I have no idea though why that happened, i put lots of files on my ipod, never had a problem before. I'm glad i can use rockbox again :)

As a note, if you put an empty file in a directory called "database.ignore" then the database will, well, ignore that folder :)

He-he, the wording is a bit ambiguous IMO :-) "database.ignore" is the name of the file. The file must be in the directory whose contents is to be ignored during the scan. The contents of the file does not matter, only the fact of its existence does. I.e. it can (but does not necessarily has to) be empty.
