iPod Nano 2G: Flash drive corruption after some usage (intermittent)
« on: November 30, 2009, 05:49:23 PM »
Hi,

I'm not sure if it's the right section, so move me if not. My first post after all.

I've installed rockbox version r23603-091110 on my iPod Nano 2G following http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/IPodNano2GPort.

I couldn't access the device connect to a USB port while the USB Mode was set to anything than "Browser" and USB HID was off. Everything else seemed fine, I've transferred some music, but while browsing through the internal menus (can't remember which exactly) the device rebooted to that annoying "Restore using iTunes" screen. So I restored using iTunes and installed rockbox again, transferred some music and started using the iPod normaly (playing music, trying out every possible demo app etc) for a few days. Then, after fully charging it, I've ran the battery benchmark, which apparently succeeded after some time. But when I've connected the device to my PC just to charge it and see the benchmark results I was again back in the "Restore with iTunes" mode.

What I tried:
1) Accessed the diagnostic mode, everything checks fine to me. Except the status register info which I can't understand, the DeepSleep and HID tests which causes the device to reboot (maybe it's normal) and the ACCSwitch test which, again, I'm not sure what it is for.

2) The iPod is recognized in the Device Manager as an 2 GB Apple Ipod USB Device under Disk Drives in either Restore, Diagnostic or Disk mode.

3) Using HxD and iBored I've found the disk drive is correct in size but completely empty (I'm not sure if the method I've used is correct).

Could someone please shed some light on it? I have that non working iPod by my side and could live whitout music for a week or so while carrying out any kind of tests required.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, I have been using the Nano 2nd Gen Build since it was first put up on this site (I'd been eagerly awaiting it since being thouroughly impressed by RockBox on My Nano 1st Gen) and I have has this exact same problem with the drive corruption at least 5 times now....with no clear indication as to why it is happening.
I also experience problems trying to connect My Nano 2ng Gen to My PC with the USB HID on "On" or the USB Mode on anything other than "Browser"

I realise the 2nd Gen is still classed as "Unsupported" but anyone who could shed light on this would brighten My day.

Setting the USB HID to "on" worked for Me a grand total of once....where I visibly saw My PC going through the routines of "Detecting New Hardware" and actually saw it install the hardware and list it is "RockBox Portable DAP" or something similar....which I found quite impressive, but on the following re-connect it failed to recognise the device....(which happens often now, and ALWAYS happens if USB HID is set to "On") and when I did manage to get My PC to recognise the device (that time and every time since, it was recognised and installed as "iPod Nano 2nd Generation") and after removing the device from My PC, upon the reboot....it failed and entered DFU mode (the "please reinstall Firmware using iTunes" screen).

This has happened 4 or 5 times now and always ends in the complete loss of all information on the drive (I've used a few different Data Recovery programs to verify this)

Can ANYONE give Me any information, an explanation, or a workaround for this?

Thanks in advance.

Sincerely,
[St.]

Using PMs to annoy devs about bugs/patches is not a good way to have the issue looked at.

I had the same problem.

I used "iLoader" as the bootloader and then it boots Rockbox.

Since then, I've never seen the "white screen of death".

Download the "ipodpatcher"

http://download.rockbox.org/bootloader/ipod/ipodpatcher/win32/ipodpatcher.exe

Download the "iLoader.ipod"

http://l4n.clustur.com/data/theseven/releases/iloader.ipodx

Put both files in the same folder.

Use the "run" command and type "cmd" and hit enter.

Navigate to wherever the ipodpatcher.exe file is using traditional DOS commands like "cd"

Make sure the iPod is plugged into your USB port and is recognized by the PC (usually it means you'll need to use iTunes to restore the Apple firmware)

Now, at the command prompt, type "ipodpatcher.exe -a iloader.ipodx" and hit enter.

It should do it's thing and make iLoader the new bootloader...

When the Nano boots up, it should show the iLoader menu. Press down to access RockBox. Do not add files using Rockbox.

If you want to add/delete files, boot the Nano in iLoader, then hit the center "select" button to activate "USB drive" mode...

I did this, and have not had any white screens after about 50 reboots.
