Ipod 1gen locked up
« on: February 19, 2010, 03:19:12 PM »
Hello everyone.I am new but have an old 1gen nano.Did an update through itunes was version 1.3 i believe.tried to install rockbox and the "Boot loader screen" comes up and says cannot find ipod(basically)i searched quite a bit on line and nobodyseems to know what to do.It will not reboot.restart or anything.the screen is frozen with the error message "cant load rockbox ipod not found"etc, tried all different sequences to get it to reboot or even shut off.Went so far as to unsolder batt and let sit 1 hr.As soon as it lights up the apple logo is ther for a second and then the boot loader tries to load and here we go again. It does not show up in "my computer".Not in itunes or any where. not being recognized by comp.Is there someway to flash anything or what do i have to do.Remember it does not show up on my computer, will not reboot.Thank you all in advance!

Do what that screen tells you: reset the Ipod by holding Menu + Select until it reboots, then immediately hold Play + Select. The Ipod enters emergency disk mode. Connect it to the PC and install the main build -- you only installed the bootloader but not the build.

What _exactly_ did you do to get it into that state? What OS are you running Rockbox Utility on and which version? Please post the output of the Help / Troubleshoot / System Info dialog.

Are you sure you're doing it right?  Apple has a nice document explaining how if its unclear to you (check google).  The hardware reboot will always work unless you've broken the buttons or something.

Was working fine minutes before this happened i did a reboot previous.i own 2 other ipods and have done it lots of times.what i think happened is the firmware was erased on the ipod and when i installed the bootloader it cannot find the ipod and i think the processor/ram do not know what the button functions mean?If i could get the firmware back on but the screen is froze and it is not recognized by computer at all.if i could reformatt somehow or remove bootloader.i tried uninstall of bootloader but does not see the ipod.also do you know what the round spot is on the metal back case?it has 2 contact points for the board?thank you.

The reset buttons are not handled by software, it's just hardware. Not all iPods reset equally quickly; make sure you are waiting with the buttons held for at least 30 seconds before you give up, and turn the hold switch on and off again first.

The disk mode accessed via select+play is in flash rom, and is not touched in any way by rockbox, so the status of the install is irrelevant.

If you let the battery run down (or disconnect it), and then turn on the hold switch before reconnecting the power, it will boot the original firmware. This is documented in the manual and does not require that the actual Rockbox build is installed; the bootloader handles it.

Instructions on booting Apple's firmware are in the third chapter.  As torne mentioned, you should have been able to do the button combination to enter Apple's disk mode as soon as the unit powered on too.
