Uninstalling ipod video 30gb unsuccesful
« on: February 18, 2010, 08:54:10 AM »
Hello, I wonder if you could help me with a problem I came up with while uninstalling rockbox from a 30GB ipod video. I used the Rockbox utility, then the "Complete uninstallation" option (not the bootloader). It finished succesfully,  then this text appeared in the ipod:

"Rockbox bootloader
Version 3.0
IPOD version: 0x000B0011
TOSHIBA MK3008GAL
Partition 1:0x0b 28521 MB
Loading Rockbox...
Error!
Can't load rockbox.ipod:
File not found
Hold MENU+SELECT to reboot
then SELECT+PLAY for disk mode"

And when I press MENU+SELECT, it does nothing. So I can't do nothing with the device

I uninstalled rockbox just after installing it, because the scroll didn't work very well, and the select button didn't work at all.

Anybody could help me? Thank you very much

Note: select button worked with ipod original firmware

The bootloader hasn't been removed.  I think rbutil should do this, try just uninstalling the bootloader.

If you don't care about the music on there, an alternative option is to do an itunes restore.  It'll wipe your music but also remove the rockbox bootloader.

Thank you for your response.

I've tried to remove the bootloader, but i can't, because in this state, the device doesn't connect to the computer

I'm going to try the itunes restore

edit: nope... itunes restore doesn't work either, the device doesn't appear...

Follow the instructions it gives you on the screen to enter disk mode, and then it will connect to the computer. You can then uninstall the bootloader. The disk mode is implemented by Apple in the ROM of the device so it always works.

Rockbox Utility doesn't uninstall the bootloader automatically. It might be worth considering to change this, or at least show it as an option in the uninstall window. Hopefully I'll get around reworking the installation window soon, as that would also help in reworking the uninstallation dialog.

I follow them, I press MENU+SELECT, but nothing happens. I think it has something to do with (at least), the SELECT button not working with the Rockbox firmware. That's the reason I decided to uninstall ;)

Now the device has run out of battery...

From my (user) point of view, it would be a good idea to do that. If you, for whatever reason, want to uninstall Rockbox, why would you like to keep the bootloader? You can always get it back if you install Rockbox again...

No, the reset buttons are implemented in hardware, so if it doesn't work then your hardware is faulty, it is nothing to do with Rockbox. The full reset procedure:

1) Turn the hold switch on
2) Turn the hold switch off again
3) Hold down MENU and SELECT together (and no other buttons) until the iPod resets. This may take over thirty seconds (though it normally only takes 5-10).
4) As soon as you see the black and white Apple logo appear, let go of MENU and SELECT and then press and hold PLAY and SELECT instead, until the disk mode screen appears.

If that doesn't work then your iPod's hardware is not functioning properly.

Edit: If your battery has run down and the iPod has turned off, though, you can get it to boot the OF by turning the hold switch on and then plugging it into a PC via USB. It will load the original firmware and then enter the regular disk mode, and you should be able to uninstall the bootloader from there.

Wow! It's just amazing how you guys Rock at this xD I tried the second option (hold switch on) and it worked. It started Ipod OF. I checked that both the scroll wheel and the buttons worked ok, and reinstalled Rockbox, and again, I get the same errors: the scroll wheel doesn`t work smoothly (i've got to move my finger repeteadly so it works) and the buttons doesn't work, so I can't move from the main menu screen. Do you know why this happens?

Anyway, thank you very much.

If the reset sequence doesn't work for you then your hardware almost certainly has an issue, as I said. The reset sequence is handled in hardware somewhere, so if turning hold on then off and holding menu+select doesn't reset, no matter if it's in the OF or rockbox or the rockbox bootloader, then something is badly wrong.

The wheel/buttons work fine for everybody else, so I wouldn't assume that just because it works in the OF that it's actually ok ;) There's not much we can do to debug this remotely; if the buttons don't work *at all* then someone would have to send you a hacked bootloader that dumps gpio/wheel status to the screen, or something, I guess? Would be very tedious..

I see... it seems that it is what you say. Nothing I can do, then. However, thank you very much, you have been really helpful!  ;)

Put the iPod into Disk Mode.  (Alternatively, follow the instructions in the manual for booting Apple's firmware.)  Then, establish a USB connection and use Rockbox Utility to remove the bootloader.
