Aha! I looked though the menus before my last post, but ruled out "sleep" thinking that meant to enter a laptop-like sleep mode where it's completely inert.

The LCD, with no backlight, is near-unreadable on my iPod Video, however. It's like reading dark gray text on a black background. I'll leave it like this and see if it's workable.

It sounds like your theme has white on black text; it's much *more* readable with the backlight off if you use black on white. But yes, it's still a little hard to see, but it's enough to see how far through a track you are, or similar.
