Switch to microphone while playing and then pause
« on: February 12, 2010, 07:34:05 AM »
I'm looking for feature that would allow to switch sound to go from microphone while playing.

My earbuds are highly isolating (Etymotic 4) and I don't hear stop announcements in subway.
It would be great that when I press "pause", the sound is switched to go from microphone so I can heaqr what happens around.

Something like this is pictch detector, but I don't know how to trigger it by pause button, I don't need pitch detection and on my player (Sansa Fuze V1) it will hang the player if started while playing.

that would be great

i could imagine even a possibility of recording from mic/radio while listening to music or using other plugins like games etc

(i just don't know if the hardware would allow it)

I very much suspect recording during playback is impossible, so that's not likely to happen. Recording needs RAM to temporarily store the recorded audio before it's encoded to the selected format and written to disk, and audio playback already fills that RAM with buffered audio.

I don't think recording while using a plugin could work either...

Anyway, on the original topic, I believe some audio accessory manufacturers make headphones with a built-in microphone specifically for that purpose, it may be easier to buy a set of those... [To anyone who might know] Can the supported DAPs even pass through audio data picked up by the microphone to the headphones..? I'm pretty sure it passes audio from line-in sources (since you can't always hear the audio from the line-in source otherwise), but I don't know if it would do that for the mic since it wouldn't usually have to...

excalibur: It would have to be done in a plugin since playback and recording in the core use the same buffer.  Here's a really old thread where people discuss some similar possibilities.

Most of the interesting stuff is on the 3rd page.  MikeS tells us that full duplex sound is possible on Coldfire targets and that mixing channels is efficient.

wrest: Try setting your recording source to microphone.  If you enter the recording screen can you hear the output from the microphone?

(?Edited, in light of the lack of Record button on Fuze.)
